Hello,

Well I thought I didn't have a problem with my starter but I want to know what this little hickup was.
Last sunday I drove for about 2 houres (55F degrees outside) after parking for about 5 minutes I wanted to start the engine again. First thing only a click, second time also the click. After waiting for another 20 or 30 seconds the engine starter without a problem.

Now I already have a rebuild normal starter with 500km on it. No headers. Already cleaned and check the ground wires no problem there. I couldn't be heat because the 30 seconds wait didn't cool the starter. No low voltage because I have a new battery and a rebuild alternator, everything checked no problem there.

So I think something is causing the solenoid to click (I think?) but no start. As long as this is only the problem then I don't mind but I don't want this to grow any bigger.

That day I drove for about 460km with several stops normally more then 20 minutes and never had a problem. My friend with his '86 C4 has the same glitch so we want to know what to look for as it can't be anything big I think.
Thank you,

Greetings Peter

Peter...did you try to jump the battery? ???
Or check it to make sure it is ok....
Otherwise I would check wiring for continuity and/or voltage drops.

Good luck with Bill

Are you getting any codes? I would do a voltage drop down test you might have a weak battery cell. Make sure battery terminals are torqued to 11 ft lbs.

I'm not familiar with which starter is on an 89 but it sounds like the contacts in the silenoid.

I'm sorry I misread you have an 81, I've seen rebuilt starters where the posts in the silenoids have been rotated and when it engages the plunger may always make good connection.

No codes on the starter problem. Last time I changed out the neutral safety switch which solved the problem (but hot all the way I know now). At the body off rebuild I checked the 12v cable and no problems there. Battery is fine so also no problem there.

The only thing I can think of as said is the solenoid that is sticking or something.

Greetings Peter

Over the years on different cars I've taken a wire wheel to the edges of the disc to knock off burn marks and turned the contact in the cap 180 degrees to get a new surface(you can see the worn side).
Always solved any intermittent start problems I had.
Used to do it cause I was cheap, now do it to retain correct parts.

In most cases rebuilt starters do not have as many windings as OEM does and the result is that you will have a hot start problem. Get a AC Delco manufactured starter and be done with it.
