Loud Popping Noise?

Hope someone can help! Making a left hand turn I heard 4 loud popping sounds (above the radio, loud). Was at work so I parked it and when I went out after work, there was a wooping sound like when you have a flat, which I didn't have. Drove about 12 miles with it making noise, stopped and then had to drive another 12 miles. Noise is gone.
Air pressure is okay in tires, three days later. Haven't driven it since and am in doubt as to if I should take it to the tire shop (tires a year old) or the mechanic, new brakes in the last couple of months? Car had about 66k, so not a lot of miles and is a daily driver.

When was the last time you had the u-joints or rear-end serviced?

My first thought, because of the popping while turning, was the rear end gears or side-yokes binding up. However, since the noise was there, then was not, I really have no clue.
Perhaps someone else will recognize the noise and experience you went through...
Good luck!

I would say to a differential problem. However with an intermittent noise, it is always hard to track down. Did you feel any thing inside the car?

Haven't figured out the the 4 pop sounds. The other noise turned out to be a "staple" in the tire. The "staple" is about 3 inches long, 1/4 or 3/8 thick round and to a point at each end. Had one point in the tread and the other part was laying on the tire. Thumping stopped once it finally meshed in the tire. After I moved the staple to see what it was, it started hitting the ground & made the thumping noise again.
Unbelieveable as it may seem, it just went thru the tread and didn't poncture the tire.
I appreciate the answers and gave me something to thing about as far as the maintance that I need to consider in the future.
Thanks for the suggestions... Chris

How lucky are you! :L
I was afraid it was going to be a major repair or overhaul and it turns out to be a staple. And not even a staple puncturing the tire, but embedded in the tread!
I want you with us when we go to Vegas!

Some people have all the luck! I am glad for you though nobody likes to see a costly repair.
