low fuel warning light

it stays on even though I have a full tank of gas. I think it's the fuel sending unit but I can't find anything in my references saying exactly where at the fuel tank it's located or what it looks like. I know it must be inside the tank but is it near the fill spout? do I need to remove the tank to check the sending unit? is there an easy fix other than removing the warning light bulb?

It's triggered by a small circuit board behind the fuel gauge, based on resistance sensed by the fuel sending unit; if the fuel gauge is working but the low fuel light isn't, it's the circuit board (or the bulb). If neither are working, it's probably the sending unit in the tank.

Where is the Low Fuel Warning Light at ? I have a 79 and have never seen it....

i suspect it's the fuel sending unit. see my initial post. thanks.

i thought this was a helpful forum website. can't get much help here.......guess i'll go to another corvette forum website.

I think JohnZ raised questions that need additional information before we can assist you further.

on my 78 pace car it (the small circuit board) is actually part of the bulb housing and not part of the fuel gauge itself. the low fuel warning light should be the top warning light in the upper right hand side lense of the center dash gauge assembly. the bottom warning light would be the generator (low or poor charge circuit) warning of the same lense strip. the matching lense in the upper left hand side of the gauge bezel is the seatbelt warning light. while i haven't checked specifically for that small board, i would try doc rebuild or eckler's if you need to replace it. i would think that perhaps an electrical trouble shooting manual might give you a procedure to narrow the problem down. i am pretty sure if you take a regular bulb socket (from one of the other bulb positions) and plug it into the position for the low fuel warning, it should stay on which would be (at least in my opinion) a real posibility that the small circuit board was defective and causing the bulb to react as if the circuit wasn't there, but that's just a calculated guess on my part.

hi bob, if you look at my original post, i've stated that i also suspect it could be my SENDING UNIT. my original post was mostly concerned about the location and identification of the sending unit and it's R&R. thanks.

The best place to go is to your mechanic, he can tell you what to do, or do it for you. Lay off the CAC, we're plenty helpfull.

your reply wasn't much help.........

That is not true.....You will not find another forum with the knowledge that is given here. You might not get your answer in the time that you are wanting it....but it will come to you and it will be good advice....CAC is the best out here ...;) :bang

The AIM has the plate with the float and the fuel meter wiring on top of the tank around the filler neck.

Hope this helps. I suspect others were simply trying to give you other avenues to explore before tackling what appears to be a PITA job.

Good luck.

I say good riddance to you if your not happy, I have asked plenty of questions and recieved plenty of answers. If you want it quicker buy a book or pay a mechanic

Low Fuel Warning Module for 77-82 Vette

Low fuel warning modules are available right now on ebay for $30. They are brand new units with a warranty. I have one in my 79 and it works fine. They fit 77-82 Vettes. It was easy to install through the glove box opening. Just do an ebay search for corvette low fuel warning module. There were 7 available when I last checked.

While we're on the subject

The answers got me thinking .... If my fuel gauge was working fine ,but my low fuel light was on constantly , and I took the cheepo (bubba) way out and just removed the bulb ... would the lack or excessive resistance cause the fuel gauge to malfunction ????

Thanks .
