The RPM Air gap he is referring to is a high rise intake manifold. This necessitates what is known as a drop base air cleaner. This means that the surface which mates to the top of the carburetter is recessed up in the base of the filter, which lowers the base of the air filter partially around the carb, hence "drop base".
These air filters are available from most parts houses.
I found a 14" round (most common) 2" high filter element for my 81 at the local parts store. Combined with the drop base air cleaner it will accomodate about any intake except for the larger high rise.
Summit has there own brand and are a bit cheaper than the others. No great differences between any of them as far as I know. The one on my 81 was a chrome 14" drop base that I picked up at the auto parts store for $25.
