How many of you 2001 or 2002 coupe or convertible owners have verified that your car was built with the LS6 block instead of the LS1?

They say approximately 10 to 15% had them in 2001 and possibly 25% in 2002. Does anyone know if it's more likely to have one if your car is built late in the model year?

My 2002 was ordered May 1st and built June 1st, it is the 1,873 car from end of production. Had car up on a lift, but the exhaust manifold on drivers side is smack dab in the way of being able to view the casting number!

Does anyone have a later built 2002 and knows whether they have this block?

There is a different casting number on each block. Located on the upper back end of the block on drivers side.

What difference does it make, anyway? I thoght that most of the difference between an LS1 and an LS6 was in the heads and induction. No?

I alawys thought that too....but i could be wrong!

There are several differences in the internals of the two blocks. If you are serious about modding your C5 car, starting with the LS6 block improvments is a good idea.

If I remember what was being said at that time; all 2002 and newer C5 LS1's have the Z06 block. And late producation 2001 had them as well.

Thanks for the reply. I had a 2002 Trans Am Collector Edition convertible as well, I put it up on the rack, and you can easily see the block casting number from underneath. Exhaust manifold is not in the way like the 'vette. It did not however have an LS6 block. It was a March '02 built car.

I tried using a telescoping mirror and flashlight topside from the engine bay, but just can't seem to read it well enough to make out the numbers yet.

Structurally, the only difference between some pre-03 LS1 blocks and LS6 blocks are the larger "windows" between crankcase bays. In fact, LS6 blocks, are called "big window" blocks because of that.

Starting with the 2003 model year all Corvette blocks are big-window ("LS6") blocks.

The only model years where there is a differnence in cylinder blocks are 2001 and 2002.

Thanks for the response!

I know the two blocks have different casting #'s, but I just can't quite read my number from the engine bay, and unfortunately the exhaust manifold blocks viewing the number from below quite well.
