The fact that the powertrain is the news for 2009 is very true.
In this post, we will cover further refinements and specific changes to both these engines.
New oil filter, UPF48R is now a requirement on all LS7 and LS9. As you may assume, yes this is fully synthetic filter media. You can retrofit this filter to ALL engines accepting the PF48.
The 2 stage oil pump has been improved for oil volume and pressure to sufficiently support oil supply under even the most INTENSE driving. It is a different part then previous LS7 pumps and this should be noted. Pic 1 is the pump.
Oil capacity has been increased to 10.5 quarts with the addition of a supplemental tank which is attached to the side of the original one.
Oil cooling has also changes along with the oil pan. LS7 will still use the integral oil cooler up front. LS9 will use an oil pan mounted heat exchanger cooler, similar to the older L98 style which runs coolant through it, this is pic 3.
Oil squirters are used on LS9 and are bolted to the underside of the block to cool pistons and walls for each cylinder. This is pic 2.
This is basic information, we will cover these changes in depth further at our C6 seminars at this years Carlisle event.
