Still searching for my first vette. I started out wanting an LT1 92 to 94 but have recently seen a nice 91 6spd convertible. Have heard the LT1 is a better choice then the L98 is this correct or just personel preference.

My opinion is just that, and is after only one year of Corvette experience.
The LT1 is a better product and revs higher than the L98 and it makes a little more HP.
The L98 has more torque, which I like, and is a little cheaper to add on performance.
I'm really happy with my LT1, its a great engine package.
Although, I think that I would have prefered a L98 or LT4.
I can always build the LT1 into an LT4 for about $2K.
Good luck, all vettes are good. :cool

add another grand to that 2 grand in an L98 say bye bye LT1/4 :D

heads intake and cam and hold on!

Just read a few posts about the trouble with the opti-spark system on an LT1 before you go buy one. How come GM only made the LT1 for 6 years?

They'd have to put a new motor in the next generation (C5) or else consumers would've been disappointed with nothing more than a new body.

The LT1 is newer, but L98 6 speeds aren't easy to come by. The LT1 has the dreaded (at least to me) opti-spark in place of the traditional distributor, which would be cheaper to replace.

Seems like parts for the L98 might be cheaper and most would say that it's an easier engine to mod, very basic and simple.

I don`t think there is a wrong answer.I recently drove a 91 Auto and I loved it! It was really fun.I have never had the privilage of driving an Lt1.Good Luck!

LT1 Optispark

The Optispark unit was altered / improved on the last LT1s.
My '96 LT1 has not had any problems in 53k mi. and I drive it fairly hard.

What engine did the 94 Z28 have? Was that an LT1? I forgot I owned one.It was a blast!

The opti-spark is one of the reasons the LT1 out-performs the L98.... Do opti-spark modules fail? yes, but so do regular distributors.... and regular distributors are usually no cheaper than an opti anyway.

higher compresion alowed buy revers cooling is what is resopnsable for the higher hp of the LT-1 . the short TPI and opty spark was so the L89 would fit under the cral of the 93 comero. try working on both the HEI and opty spark and you whould give up a fue HP to get away from Opty spark

I've owned both an L98 and an LT1. The L98 was great off the line, but ran out of breath early, while the LT1 keeps on pulling. Both are great engines, but I prefer the LT1.

Paul :w

The LT1 puts out slightly more tourqe and about 50 more horsepower--
Better yet, if you are interested in power and speed (who's not?) just go to any "Corvette day" at a track near you and see what kind of times various years are turning.

Every time I go to Raceway Park for these events, there are so many stock Vetts of either type, LT1s run in the mid 13s and L98s run in the high 13s to low 14s. Yes, there are all kinds of variables but LT1s are usually faster.

Check out a spark scatter graph between an L98 and LT1, You will probably be surprised at the difference. As far as reverse cooling goes, they found out later on it didn't make that much of a difference, if any difference at all....

The best advice is buy the newest one you can afford with the least amount of miles on it.
I have had a TPI car before and the Lt1 beats it hands down, just as I would take an LS1 over my Lt1.
The opti agrument is about the dumbest reason not to buy a 92-96. We could argue all day about the problems with both engines, I'm sure the LS1 has it's share as well.
There is always going to be something bigger, better, faster, etc..
Do whatever makes you happy.

I agree with vettn94 about doin what makes you happy. Some people look at me like I am some weirdo cause I bought an 84 with what they think is the god forsaken Cross Fire Injection. Yet my car always starts for me,idles great and runs like a scalded dog. I mean my 84 flies alot faster than I thought it would and the only mod I can find on it is a gutted cat. So buy what ya want and enjoy it. I know I am.

:beer

I have an 88 L98. A buddy has a 95 LT1. Off the line I will be about a fender length ahead of him till about 100MPH then the big HP of the LT1 kicks in. Stop light to stop light I have a faster car. My car has very little done to it. Borla cat back, K&N, ported plenum and base and thats about it. I have no complaints with my L98 and would not hesitate getting another. I agree with most in getting the newest best condition you can aford be it LT1 or L98.

L-98 Vote here

Yes an LT-1 is newer...but not better

The OPTI is a pain however the cost of replacing either system ( parts ) is similarly priced ( from GM) however the LABOR is completely different.... So a conventional HEI distributor may not be quite as cool as the OPTI but it wont leave you AS stranded..

and I'll wrench race anyone replacing the HEI vs OPTI and spot em two beers in time.

LT-1 specific parts are a bit more costly
( water pump, wires,ignition parts,sensors)

You can build the SNOT outta either power plant.

So the choice is yours.

I am just expressing my perference.

BTW
I can get HEI distribitors for $100.00 each as opposed to the $275-325 for the opti

Vig,

The first thing I'd like to address is: What the @#$! is that on your avatar? That thing scares me more than that space robot you had!:L :L :L

Either way, LT1 or L98, you won't go wrong. Of course, the LT4's are quite affordable nowadays and LT4's have more horses and twist than either LT1 or L98.

If you covet an LS1, but can't shell out the bucks for a C5, the LS1 F-bodies aren't too expensive. A few mods and you can run with non Z06 C5's.
