What are "typical" rebuild costs for a high mileage LT5 motor? Are there any parts that are becoming difficult to get or which are wickedly expensive (things like cams, starter motors, secondary vacuum control devices, etc.)?

If anyone has gone through the rebuild ordeal recently, could you share your experiences and some of the major cost items that you paid for?

Is there a short list of highly recommended LT5 rebuilders/tuners out there? Would it be worth shipping a motor to one of these specialist guys rather than taking a chance with the locals?

thanks,

Steve

I would have to guess it would start at around $7K-$10k and go up ...I would send it to someone with lots of time on the LT5.

Go to http://www.zr1.net/ and check out the "ZR-1 Repair Shops"in the blue bar on the left side of the screen. The closest one and highly recomended is

He is one of the best there is. It takes expensive tools to take apart & assemble an LT-5 engine and Jim has the experience and training to do the job.

Ship the motor out for a little peace of mind, it's well worth it. Plus, I doubt a local will even touch it.

A stock rebuild will cost around 7k, add roughly another 6-8k for a 368 build out.

The only part that is hard to find is the early oil pumps. Which thankfully don't fail that often.

I just went through a 368 build out and used SGC as the builder, but did alot of work myself. I saved some money, but not as much as I had hoped.

Pumps are not a problem. Just take the guts out of a late pump and put them in the early pump.

You can buy a LT5 rebuild tool kit for $500 through the ZR-1.net

Parts are getting expensive and some are hard to find.
But I have not heard of a LT5 rebuild because of high milage yet..
Ive Onlyheard of 3 bad faluires and one of those was a head gasket on a 414 motor the other was a N.O.S explosion in the plenum. and the last one was a motor I saw on ebay that the head and intake cam were damaged due to a mechanics error.

I have the GM CPT videos that the LT5 mechanics trained with then took there tests so they would be certified to work on the ZR-1 its a piece of cake to work on these motors!
Parts are another one!

LT5 Rebuild Costs/Parts

Thanks for all the good information so far. Has anyone done a recent stock rebuild and can itemize the major parts needed/costs and labor costs for us?

You can but the cylinder liners and piston/ring package for about $1,200.

I've got lots of great condition parts from my 95 ZR1 which are stock "take off" parts from a 25k car that was build by LPE.

the rods/pistons/liners/rings are in great condition and would work fantastic for a stock rebuild and save some $$$ see posting here if interested.

GM CPT videos?

Where can i obtain one of these videos?
