What are the benefits, what are the drawbacks?

I am considering doing this as I heard the coolant running through the TB is not needed - what would I need to do this??

Parts shopping list appreciated!

Thanks in advance! :beer

from what I've read GM has coolant going through the TB to prevent it freezing in COLD weather. VERY COLD weather. SInce you don't drive the car in very cold weather it wouldn't hurt anything to bypass it.

The aftermarket TBs don't have the connection for the coolant. You can check out how my lines are run since I do NOT have the bypass kit installed. The hoses are rerouted.

Is there a performance gain. Don't know.

I did the bypass to a GMC pickup I had with a 6.0 ltr. Looking at the front of the throttlebody at the lower left corner and the lower right corner there is a nipple that a coolant hose goes onto. This aids in startup to get the intake air up to temp fast. The kit you can buy is a tube with two small hose clamps. You remove the two hoses incert them into the tube and use the clamps to tighten them down. You have now bypassed the tbody.A couple of caps are included to cap the ends on the tbody.

Bluewasp, can you swing by tomorrow afternoon??? :D

Anyone else with experiences on this???? Thanks! :m
It wasn't an LTx, but I did this bypass on my '02 Z06. It was an easy mod, but I can't say I noticed a difference. As Bluewasp said, the coolant is circulated through the TB to keep it from freezing in cold weather. I think the purpose of the bypass is to keep the hot coolant from heating up the TB, thus keeping the air charge cooler and more dense.

There are realy no drawbacks. The colder the air entering your Tbody the better .
It is on my list of doos.

Do you suppose the hot coolant that circulates through the heads (and possibly the intake manifold) would warm the TB enough anyways??

I think I am sold on this idea - Thanks for the info!!!!! :beer

Bluewasp, you coming over???????

I think absolutely this stuff will still get warm/hot even with the bypass. Does coolant circulate through the LT1 intake? If so, air spends a lot more time there than in the TB.

I can see doing it if you are trying to squeeze every last bit from a car, but I can't imagine it makes much difference by itself. Presumably it will make it easier to remove the TB, if that's something you occasionally have to do.

WHEN AIR PASSES OVER A SHARP EDGE LIKE THE BLADES IN THE BODY THE AIR GETS VERY COLD.IF THERE IS WATER IN THE AIR IT WILL FREEZE AND YOU CAN HAVE ICE BUILD UP.I HAVE NEVER HAVE ANYONE HAVE THIS PROBLEM ON A CAR.

WHEN I BLOCKED OURS OFF I JUST PUT PIPE PLUGS IN SIDE THE HOSE ON BOTH SIDES TO BLOCK THE WATER FLOW.THAT WAY IT LOOKS STOCK AND TO CHANGE BACK TO STOCK EASY.

This was one of the first mods I did when I got my SuperNatural back from Old Lyme.
Have it on my Camaro SS also.
Never experienced any ill effects

You don't "need" any parts, per se. But I consider it a total waste of time and effort.

You can remove the hose from the front of the TB and relocate it to the metal tube running under the passenger side frame rail cover by removing the rubber hose from the end of that tube and from the side of the TB (and toss it aside). If you want to, you can cap off the inlet and outlet nipple with two rubber end-caps from auto parts stores but that isn't necessary to complete the bypass.

I actually have experienced icing, but it was on a carb'd car. It wasn't super cold - in the 20's, but the air was very moist. Not the type of weather you'd be driving the 'vette in anyway.

On a TPI motor, it's a worthwhile mod just to clean up the engine compartment and make changing injectors a lot easier. That's not an issue on an LTx, though, as the injectors are "exposed". If you want to do the mod and make it real clean, buy another bottom plate (IAC housing) for your TB off ebay and dremel off the coolant passages. You can find them for $15 or so, and that way you won't have unused coolant nipples hanging off your TB.

Can I just plug the ends of the small hoses that feed in and out of the TB??

Then I don't have to route a bunch of bypass hoses :ohnoes

No, you need to pull the two coolant hoses off the bottom of the TB and connect them together - no routing hoses necessary. You can then plug the empty connections on the TB.

I don't think you can follow the hoses back to their origin and plug those, too, or you'll lose coolant circulation (to the heater core?).

Yeah, I am going to Richmond for a few hours in the afternoon :cool

Maybe on Sunday??? I posted the question yesterday - :beer

This weekend should work. I sold the 1980 corvette and the guy is coming by this weekend "sometime".

That's correct.
