Can anyone tell me where the M/C solenoid dwell lead is located? Also, can you tell me how to check the voltage at this dwell lead.
I'm trying to fix a code 23 and the shop manual says * Turn ignition "on", engine off. *Do NOT ground test term. * Check voltage at M/C solenoid dwell lead.
I've done lots of mechanical stuff, but I'm not so good at the electrical part. Thanks for any help.

Sir,

I think perhaps there is a typographical error somewhere regarding an M/C solenoid and that has you mislead. On an 81 there is M/P or Manifold Pressure Sensor on the firewall (item E in the schematics). Next to it is the EGR relay (not illustrated in the schematic). On the right side rear of the intake are 1 or 2 EGR Control Valve Relay Solenoids dependent upon automatic or 4 speed transmission.

Refer to the following schematics for automatic and 4 speed.

The M/C dwell lead should be found hanging out of the harness somewhere between the carb & a/c compressor. It's a single green wire with a connector on the end.

Sir,

Ooops, I missed that one by not looking thoroughly. I always keep my copy of last iteration of P&A 30 handy to assist my memory. And in perusal of the main index under Solenoid, I missed seeing a listing for a Mixture Control. Actually I missed it because there is none listed. However, there is a group for Idle Air Control Solenoids, but those part listings end with the 1978 model year.

The trick for Corvettes after 1978 is to search in the addendum following the GM group normally devoted to that subject. Therein lies the 1981 part as well as 1979, 1980 and 1982 carburetor parts also.

If you need that specific item, it is still available new from GM. In the April 2003 P6 GM Parts & Accessories Price Schedule it was only $119.03, but that price increased with the August 2003 Price Schedule to a suggested list of $142.26, however you may obtain a lower value in reality as that is the “suggested list”.

As of today, at 4 PM EST there were 6 pieces in the Boston, MA warehouse; 6 pieces in the Philadelphia, PA warehouse and 134 pieces in the Martinsburg, WV parts plant & warehouse. Additional stock can also be found in the other Western, Southern and Mid-Western GM warehouses.

If you seek a used one, the same exact Solenoid was also used on these other GM car lines: Buick, Pontiac and GMC. I cannot assist with a specific model application within those car lines.

The last new C3 I had was a 1979. Never had an 1980, 1981 or an 1982. After my 1979, my next new one was a C4. In my view after the 1979 model, the new Corvettes became much more dependent upon electronic and I only keep them while they are in warranty.

Thanks to all, I found the test plug and also foundd my problem. there is something wrong with the solenoid itself. One of the prongs that stick out of the solenoid is lose and not always making contact.
I wrapped a wire tie around it and its been fine. The car does not run real rich anymore. Thanks for all your help.

Richard,
Do you mean the prongs on the outside of the carb that the harness plugs onto??? If so, my harness connector has been broken (the retaining clip has been snapped off so there's nothing to hold it in place). I've wrapped a tie-wrap around it to keep it plugged in & it works OK. But.... if I drive over a particularly fierce bump then the check engine light will briefly flash. It took me a while to realsie what was causing it, so if you get the odd check engine it could be that connector.
Doc,
Can you help me with a part for an '81 auto L81?? I've been trying to find this part for 2 years. It's the TVS fitted in the d.side of the t/stat housing (water neck?) to control the purge cannister. The only emmision system still in place is the purge cannister but the switch is broken. The other TVS in the housing is for the EFE system & is nothing like the purge TVS (I know this as I've been sold one as the purge TVS, so if anybody needs an EFE TVS let me know!).
Also, do you know if it's possible to buy harness connectors on their own ie. without having to buy the harness. I need a connector for the carb M/C solenoid & also the TCC lockup connector that plugs onto the tranny connector.
Thanks
Paul
