Ok guys [this includes you gals out there as well]! I am going crazy or something :W , but I cannot recall how far back (or into the cam cover seal) the harmonic balancer should be installed.:cry

Could someone measure the distance between the forward-most tip on the timing tab (I think the tip on the timing tab that is closest to the 0 degree mark) and the front edge of the balancer?

Honestly, I recognize that this request may not be easy to grant (given the small amount of room available), but I looked through the maintenance manual and it just says to install it. But, the sealing surface of the balancer that inserts into the cam cover seal shows about 1/4" to 3/8" space and the forward-most tip of the timing tab and the front edge of the balancer is about 0.43" or a little more that 3/8".

This could affect the alignment of the drive belts. So please answer my call for help. By the way, I have all the pulleys for an automatic L81 with A/C. Thanks a million, folks!

easy!

Gerry, when I did my motor changeout (stock to a crate) the harmonic balancer, as I recall, merely bolted right back to the crank, there was not a space issue. Just pulled it back till the bolts bottomed out and torqued it to the specs listed.
Maybe I'm the one who didn't do it right?

Mike,

Thanks for the reply. I have been trying to assemble my L81 as close to the stock version as possible, so I am using the stock cam cover. The cover, as you know, is the type that has the timing tab welded to it.

Are you also using the stock cover? If so, then when you look at the timing tab front edge -is it aligned with the front edge of the harmonic balancer? Or does it seem to have about 3/8" distance to the edge?

The sealing surface of the harmonic balancer is approximately 1" long, and from the crank shaft end to the cam gear front face on the crankshaft is about 1.345". When I measure from the harmonic balancer's front face to the front end of the crankshaft (where the bolt ties to) I get approximately 1".

So apparently, the sealing surface has only entered the seal on the cover for a little more than a 1/3". And this to me seems odd. :confused
