Mobile 1 Synthetic Engine Oil

WOW--fdxpilot---thankyou for the Walmart tip on Mobil-1 oil. That is under $4.00 a qt.--I have been paying over $6.00 a qt. Do they have 10-30 there too? I live in FL and it gets hot down here so I run 10-30.

Terry

It should be available. They have both, here, and the price ranges from $18 to $20 for the jug. Still a deal at $20. Just make sure you get the original Mobil 1. The new extended variety doesn't meet the GM standard. Although, as mentioned by Hib above, it may be a better oil, though not certified,

THANKS FOR THE INFO. . . . . . . . .

You've all been great help as usual. Took me a while to get use to the mult-viscosity oil anyway, I always used 20w in the winter, and up to 40w in the summer. Now that I have accepted the mult-weight oil I one time had a mind set that the 5w30 was too lite and switched that particular vehicle over to 10w30 and developed a lifter noise, changed back to tthe 5w30 and it went away. For this reason I may be a little bit leery using the 10w30 in lieu of the 5w30, but I do not drive the Vette in the winter either so I am considering the 10w30 but not sure yet.

Thank you all again very much; perfect example of what makes CAC the BEST, the membership.
;help ;help I have a thread also about my parking lights that do not come on with the mult-switch anymore, it went from turning it off and on 4 or 5 times and sometimes more to not coming on at all with the switch. If I turn it all the over to head lamps they work, but not the park, tail, dash and etc. I of course expect the switch itself it is the culprit. What would be your thoughts on this anyone. Surely I am not the only one that has experienced this situatation. :hb ;help Again I would very much appreciate any help here that anyone could give me.

Thus, the best oil choice for just about any Corvette (other than those which are heavily-modified or are race only) is a 10W30. Mobil 1 makes a very good 10W30 and I see it at some Costco stores for a reasonable price.

The best 10W30, in my opinion, comes from the Red Line Synthetic Oil Corporation but, admittedly, it's more expensive. It also does not meet 4718M because Red Line chooses not to certify it due to the expense and that certification effectively prohibits continuous improvement of the product.

Bottom line: if you want your C4, 5 or 6 engine to run hardest and last longest, switch from a 5W30 to a 10W30. Mobil 1 is good. Red Line is better.

WOW! Thanks for the info - super helpful.

Hib, how do you feel about 5W30 when ambient temps are in the teens or lower, for those of us driving our vettes in areas that have cold, but not snowy winters.

Outstanding information, as always thanks a lot Hib, you da MAN!

I've tested Red Line's 10W30 to -20 deg. F. As long as you've got a battery in good condition, it'll start the motor at -20. I made a cold weather test trip up into Wyoming in 02 and one of the reasons I went was to see what Red Line's 10W30 would be like in the real cold stuff. I was there a week and three of the mornings is was -20. Each time, after an overnight cold soak, the engine fired right up and cranking was pretty fast. I'll admit to letting the engine warm quite a while before driving but that was more to let the heater warm the interior (let me tell you -20 is freakin' cold) than to warm the engine.

Now, the test engine was a 4.3V6, not an LT5 but it also used a lower power battery. I think that given the correct battery in good shape, an LT5 should have no problem starting on 10W30 at -20.

The coldest I've started my LT5 is about 12 F. No problems on 10W30. I'd say a 10W30--which was all we had prior to the "invention of 5W30 oils--will work fine in areas were you see sustained temps in the teens.

I think where you *need* a 5W30 is if it gets colder than that, say mornings at less than -20 but, more importantly, days where the temperature never gets over -15 and your doing short trips where coolant temp doesn't come up.

*Then* you might use the 5W30.

Awesome information, you da Man! :upthumbs
