I am considering putting a HyperTech performance chip in my 85 coupe (at some point in the future), but a friend of mine suggested that I check to make sure that a previous owner had not already installed one, or installed one incorrectly. Problem is this: I don't know where to look for one. I've seen them in the magazines and know that it's only an IC chip that needs to be installed, but where would one install it. I was expecting some details to come with the chip when I ordered it, but since I'm doing checking first, I'm sort of short on documentation.

Can anyone tell me where it would be installed?

Thanks

The chip/eprom is located in the ECM (electronic control module - computer). It should be on the passenger side under the dash. I think it is in the same location as my 84. You can access it by removing the plastic plate under the dash. There should be 2 10 mm bolts, once removed the ecm should slide down. There should be a small plate that is removed to expose the chip.

You can also buy a Haynes manual and it will have instructions for replacing the eprom. I hope this helps.

There is no point in buying a Hypertech chip, its worthless. All it does is turn your fans on earlier. Definitely not worth the $200 price.

If you got one for say, $20, its ok.

Vader's right, except not all of them even turn the fans on earlier. I bought a custom chip from Jeff on this board. When I went to install it, found that I already had a HyperTech chip in there - did so little good that I still get exactly the 1/4 mile time of a stock 86...

If you want my HyperTech, you're welcome to it. It's for a 4+3.

Vader86; So you guys are saying that ALL a chip will do is (sometimes) turn your fan (s) on earlier (meaning at a lower temp)? THAT'S IT?
I don't understand this at all. Is it just a complete rip-off performance wise and they affect the fans only to prevent false claims lawsuits?
I can't believe that for $200!
Someone needs to go to jail then....

Last year I replaced the stock chip with one from hypertech and it made quite a difference. Better acceleration, tranny shifted better and made no difference in the fans. But mine is an 85....

So I would not say their chip is worthless and does nothing in a blanket statement. Folks should be careful who they slander....

And if you have an 85 automatic and would like to try the chip to feel the difference....let me know.

So then; can anybody tell me exactly what a chip DOES or CAN DO? What does it affect? I have one in mine and am happy with the performance but can not say what part of that performance is attributable to the chip. Maybe some, maybe none as I have not driven another similar C4 to compare to.
Heck with it, I'll start a thread on this so everyone can pitch in....

A chip is *supposed* to increase performance by changing the fuel/air mixture map and any other parameters stored in the ECU that the chip maker thinks will help. In the case of an automatic, they can also change the shift points. However, they're making one generic chip for all cars of a given specification (ie, year/transmission/engine size) which isn't much different from what the car manufacturer does. So on an average car, you may not see any performance increases at all. And depending on the mods you've made, you may actually HURT performance with a generic chip.

It can be argued that if the car manufacturer can get 95% of the best performance from a car, they're not going to spend lots of $$ to get that extra 5% while an aftermarket company might. Also, the OEM is concerned more with average fuel economy and best performance for the whole LINE of vehicles rather than an individual specific unit (although the chip makers have the same problem).

Regarding the fans, Hypertech had two units that I'm aware of - one was a CoolChip (IIRC) that worked in conjunction with their lower-temp thermostat to make the car run cooler (which increases performance) and the other didn't do anything with the fans. That second one is what's in my car.

The blanket statement I made, btw, is based on some reviews of chips that I read about last year while researching what to put in mine. If you do a Google search, you'll find them (I didn't keep the links). They essentially say, in more words, what I said above - a generic replacement chip, on average, won't do anything for you.

This pertains to NA cars, btw. With a turbocharger, controlling the boost by changing the ECU is a proven means for getting more performance at the cost of stressing the engine more.

See, I learned something there. A couple of trusted friends with vettes have driven mine and they thought it had a shift kit in it because it would shift so hard/fast into second it spins the 285's like nothing and will loop right around if you are not careful. Now I think it may be the chip that is causing this performance shifting. BTW my gas miliage is very good on the HWY at about 30+MPG
