I am doing a frame off modification to my 78 Vette, and will be building a Big Block for it. My goals are to reach about 500-550 HP.

I am looking into buying a 700R4 trans for my Vette. I have found a company that offers high performance built overdrive transmissions. The package I am interested in is their Level 3 Extreme Duty trans that will handle up to 600 HP. http://www.700r4.com/trans/level3.html

I was wondering if anyone has any dealings with this company, and what do you think of them?

Thanks!

Bill

Bill,

I have not had any personal dealings with Bowtie but they are the people that get referred to on this issue both here and at the other forums.

I just took a quick look but it appears that their prices have dropped over the last year.

I think their prices have come down some. The cool thing is they also have the modified crossmember for the C3 frame for only $179. That way I will not have to cut up my original one up to make it work.

They way I figure, I can be totally set up trans wise for under $2000. (modified trans, crossmember, torque converter, lines and TV cable with setup) I don't think I can piece it together on my own for any less than that.

About the only thing I will have to do on my own is have the driveshaft cut down a few inches.

Bill-

I purchased a tranny from them for my 78 to run with my TPI. Loved the tranny. Great quality, great price.

Be warned - if you are getting a tranny that is warranted, you will have to record the reading for the line pressure at several temps and gears. Its kinda mickey mouse, but easy. This just lets them know that you have installed the tranny and its set up properly. Then, you get the warranty for 1 year or whatever.

I have a friend who is running a 385 fast burn in a built 85 Camaro. He purchased a tranny from someone else- his tranny was fried in six months. He's so fed up with 700R4s that he is doing a Richmond 6spd conversion.

Thanks for the info!

Do they give you a proceedure on how to get the line pressure readings?

Also, if I buy one, but don't get it on the street for a while, will they start the warranty when I start using it, or on delivery dates?

Thanks!

I would think it starts from the day you make the deal.

Bowtie Overdrives will not start the warranty until you (and more importantly, they) say the installation is 'complete' -- so you have all the time in the world.

They have a pretty-well documented process for taking the pressure readings, and even will sell you a pressure gauge...
The initial TV cable adjustment was not well documented with their custom linkage system for the QJET, but a phone call to them (while at the car, attempting to set it) and they were able to walk me through it....

Like DarkShark said, they are pretty picky on wanting to make sure the setup is dialed in before they warranty it..... and line pressures make or break the 700R4. In my case they're not happy with what my trans temps are running....

matchframe,
I have a trans..from Bow-Tie. I had them install check the pressures and all. They have everything from top to bottom for any level trans that you want. The directions are very specific as well. If you are mech inclined it should be pretty easy to install....I think the adjustment for the T.V. cable is the worse part ..They have custom made brackets for all of the different carbs.

I live approx. 1 1/2 from Bow-Tie. So if there is anything that I can do for you let me know...
