1970 Stingray,
I sure want to do the Monza fuel filler conversion. You may be the person who has the page covering that. I just sent you an email to this effect. If you are, would you be willing to make one of those adaptors that makes the thing sit right. Let me know, I am about to drop my fuel tank and now is the time. Thanks

Rod

Rod,

Contact Pete D'Oliva or Dave Herlinger at Corvette Repair in Mt. View, CA at 650-969-5351.

Pete has developed a CNC program to produce the adapter rings for the cap. He made one for my '69, a photo of the car showing the cap is here:

http://www.caspeed.com/images/69-rear-qtr.jpg

The aluminium alloy adapter is setup to use countersunk stainless steel hardware to attach it, so it looks great and won't rust.

Note that there is a small depression molded into the 'glass deck where you put your finger to flip up the stock door. That depression looks a bit awkward with the cap installed. It requires filling and painting work if you want to eliminate the depression.

My cap setup is currently just eye candy, as I have an ATL fuel cell in the car which has it's own filler cap on the fuel fill pipe. The plumbing required to make the trick cap work is certainly do-able, but it is a pia that I'm not up to working on now.

D'mn Mako

That whole car of yours is eye candy!! Absolutely nice!

Why didn't you go with the chrome sidepipes?

This is the one I did on my 77 with that same area filled.

Mako,
Thanks for the info I'll call them.

Brutus,
Where did you get the insert? It looks good as well, and since I have the tank out right now, its a great time for me to get this done. Let me know. Thanks

Brutus - looks sweeeeet!

Hijinx - note that I have a different style cap than what Brutus has on his car. His is a flush mount (slick!) while mine is a Leman's type cap setup that was run on the Ford GT40's and Cobra's back in the late 60's (yeah, I know, a F* part on a Vette, gasp! :)

The adapter rings, while similar, are going to be different. Pete's adapter is made to fit my external style cap, not Brutus' flush style. Certainly Pete could create another CNC program to fit the flush style cap, but he would need a sample of the cap assembly to create the program first.

PS: Check out the Fuel Cell link on my homepage, I have a good photo of the LeMan's type cap there.

Great info on the gas lid.

However, later tonight I will "split" this thread to a more appropriate fashion. This great gas lid info will not be seen by anybody that is not interested in the headlights since the title of the thread does not reflect the direction it has gone.

Like I said, great info on the gas lid, but it would be better to start a fresh one with these pics and links for that information.

Give me a day or so to get back to this and I will split and move it all around.

Mako,
Yea, I know they are different. I'm trying to decide if I want to go to the trouble of the LeMan's style cap or just go with the flush mount like Brutus has. The LeMan's style is classic, but poses a bit of a problem with filling the tank. I have trouble seeing when my tank is almost full now. Having to fill it through an extra 5 or so inches of tunnel could be a real hassle. That's why I am thinking about the flush mount. Also, I could mount that to my deck lid and not worry about removing it when I repaint the car. The LeMans would have to come off.

Agreed on all accounts. Installing a fuel cell is a totally different game than just adding some tasty eye candy to the rear deck of the car however.

The filler spout on the cell is indeed about 3" too short and it is a bit of a PIA to fill the darn thing, but it sure beats having 22 gallons of gasoline fueled flambe' cooking my keester in the event of a crunch on the track or the street.

Next time I drop the cell, I'll see if I can stretch the filler neck that 3" with a bit of crafty tig welding.

Petrol cap info.

Chris...Sorry about diverting your thread away from it's intended theme. Guess we just got carried away. We should be spanked.:bash

Anyhow here's a bit more of my installation plus a link to the place where I brought it. I believe there are places in the US that have similar caps, but I'd have to say that the quality of the one I bought is quite outstanding. It's from Britian I believe.

Is that purty car or what??? I love that burn your retina yellw!

Earl's is a Holley company now, the part is likely US made. http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLine/Products/EPP/EPP.html has the catalog and you can order most any Earls product from Summit or Jegs as long as you have the part #.

Was that a 4 1/2 inch part? That's what the one at Earl's looks like.

klb...I'm sorry I don't have a name for the yellow colour my car is painted in. Originally it was Corvette Tan. One of the most unsports car colours I've ever seen.

Allen...The filler caps are from a company called Newton Equipment which is an English company and has been going for 22 years. Check out their web page here. http://www.newton-equipment.com

Brutus, Have been checking around the states today on this an I cant find anyone who carries the Newton Flush-Fit Filler Caps. It may be an Austrialian only kinda thing. Do you think you could get me a price on that unit? If it is not too expensive, I would really like to consider getting one. Let me know. Also, if they know of anyone in the states who carries them, that would be fine too.

Chris, sorry about taking up your headlight space. I still want to save up for that conversion as well!!!

Mine was the 140mm (4 3/4" model.) I'd have to check for the exact model number tho.

They show the Aero 500 as 140mm (5.5 inches) and the Aero 400 as 120mm (4.75 inches). If your 140mm is correct it looks like I would use a A512S, from their site's tech spec. sheet. Does that sound right? I sent them an email about possible US dealers.

As you can probably see from my close up pic, I could have used a slightly bigger cap but the 500 was the largest they had. I originally planned to turn up an alloy base to take up the small gap around the outside of the cap, but I'll leave it for now as I'm well into another project. Does lots of itching give you a clue? :D

I actually like the little lip that leaves. It makes it even more flush with the deck lid. I'm with you on the itching. I am about to start that process as well. So, it looks like the Aero 500 is what I need. Now I just need to figure out how to get one! Any ideas on this point?

We'll have to see what we can come up with. I'm off to work here now and won't be back until 11.00pm my time so I'll "see" you then.
Btw, these things aren't cheap ......well at least it wasn't over here. $300.00 Aus +!
