I think the CF hood on the Z16's were pretty much a test by GM to see how people would react to using CF on a Corvette. It was also a test to see how well the vehicle would react to that material.

It'll be interesting to see how extensive they will use CF to save weight. It will cost more but I'm sure that if they build to a certain number, they will get price breaks on material.

But didn't they have a problem with painting the CF?

Actually, I think the reason why they started out with using the CF hood was to determine if they could manufacture carbon fiber products at a reasonable cost and high quality without sucking the life out of Corvette owners' wallets.

As I recall, they did have a problem with painting the hoods, and (don't quote me on this) if I'm not mistaken, the problem stemmed from the production process for the hood. I believe they were having a problem with the fibers lining up properly and providing a smooth enough surface for the paint. If the surface wasn't smooth enough, pits or ripples could be seen on the painted surface.

Again, don't quote me on this because I'm going on memory here, but if you search through some of the threads in the 2001-2004 Z06 Forum, I believe the problem is outlined there.

...I for one seriously hope we don't see a bunch of useless carbon fiber in places where it doesn't enhance performance, (like center dash panal trim etc.) if it is going into the car, at least use it for a component large enough to make a significant weight savings, hood, outside door panals, roof etc. Carbon fiber trim panels are for kids, the Z06 should be a serious performance car....

Oh, I don't know about that. I think cf is very sharp. I have the complete PFYC "Ultimate Dash" package in my car and it makes the interior look like a different car. I don't have a shot of mine, but this is what it looks like:

Not stick on stuff either, these are complete replacement panels.

On the new Z, cf would look sharp instead of the brushed aluminum stuff in the base C6. Would also serve to differentiate the interior from the base Vette.

As for body panels, a hood like this would be cool!! (I'm a bit bias though.) :D

Just my thoughts about carbon fiber. It is used on racing applications because it is light and STRONG. I'm not so sure how strong the glove box lid has to be. There are less expensive choices for light materials that don't need the strength of CF. To be $ effecient it should be used where other materials have to be beefed up or heavy to give the required strength. Carbon Fiber is cool, but it is not the ultimate in street machines. Stripping some of the un-needed junk from the interior, lighter seat assemblies, lexan windows, etc. is a good step toward 2900 pounds. Carbon fiber and other exotic light materials may become more viable as aluminum prices spiral upward in the future months (much like steel has).

don't forget the Blue Demon (Devil) whatever they are calling it - will it's design be close to these mules, as isn't BLUE supposed to be out before the Z06?

I doubt that blue will be out before the Z06. No one is even acknowledging a blue devil officially yet. Only the z06 has been acknowledged.

If the Z06 is going to have 500hp, what are they going to do with the Blue Devil?

The early rumors I remember hearing about the Blue Devil was it was going to forced induction, either super charged or twin turbo, and the H.P. was at least 625.
