I was wondering way this car was hard to start and once running had to feather the gas to keep it going. Once warmed up it idles at about 1200 rpm in gear. Noticed check engine light was on, came up with code 32. I found the EGR Solenoid mounted on one of the thermostat bolts and found it had no vacuum lines connected to it. It looks like there should be three lines on it one on one side of the solenoid on two on the other. What vacuum lines are supposed to connect to it? I assume the EGR would be one of them but I’m not sure where it is located. I have a service manual coming but it hasn’t arrived yet, any help appreciated.

No one has replied to this post. I am having trouble finding a vacuum diagram for my 89 C4 the one on the radiator is not readable and the FSM I just received in the mail today does not show a diagram.
The problem I have is there are no vacuum lines hooked up to the EGR solenoid. I can see the EGR valve under the plenum with one hose coming off it but the other end is hooked up to the rear of the plenum on the passenger side. Is that where it should be?
If anyone can help please do or if you have a diagram please post it. Thanks

does it make sense to you? Maybe just buy 10 ft of vacuum hose and re-do most of the lines. Might have some minor cracks/leaks,sorce of alot of idle problems.

If you could see how the hoses are on this car it does not make sense. It appears someone had possible removed the engine or something and forgot how to hook everything back up. The diagram makes sense the car does not. I just found two more hoses that are broken off and have no idea where they go. They split off of one hose coming from the round canister in the front left fender. This car is a cluster! Guess I better just start from scratch using the diagram you posted.

Much better picture thank you. Yes it’s all screwed up and runs like crap I can’t wait to get it right.

the single port on the egr solenoid is left open..good idea, start from scratch, try starting from the egr valve first, hook up the egr valve hose to the switch, then hook the switch hose to the split etc..

Right by the egr solenoid there is a port on the plenum what is supposed to connect to it? The diagram doesn’t show it.

i see it on the diagram? It's labeled, "fitting",the doted line on the diagram means it's on the bottom of the plenum.
The one on the bottom of the plenum goes to the split, the other sie of the split goes to the egr solenoid, make sure it plugs to the left side of the egr solenoid....Now the single end of the "split",goes down toward the canister, are you following the diagram now?

Yes I can see it now. Thanks a lot for your help T.M. I’m going to try to get at this problem tomorrow if it’s not to cold ( I have to work on it outside). I’ll let you know how it turns out. Thanks again…

Okay now were getting somewhere. I re-routed all the vacuum hoses to there rightful ports and it runs much better. I’m down to one port left on the plenum that goes to the HVAC, anyone know where I well find the vacuum hose for it? Does it come out of the firewall somewhere? Almost forgot the diagram didn’t show where the vacuum for the cruse control goes

cool news.... were you actually able to drive the car the way it was? How is you're idle now?
I can't do it for a few hours, but i'll go look at my 89 and let you know exactly were the cruise control hose goes.
When you get this all sorted out,you should probably, remove and clean the throttle body, check the timing,check/set the TPS voltage then do an idle re-learn procedure to get that car cherry!

Surprisingly it was drivable but ran like crap, only drove it about 35 miles to get it home from the seller. It started much easier but the ideal was still a bit high at 1,000 put it in gear and it went down to 700 - Not sure how to check/set the TPS voltage then do an idle re-learn procedure?
When you check yours for the cruse could you also see where the HVAC hose comes out of the firewall? Thanks, Keith

I don't know for sure on the 89 but on the LT1 there is a vacuum valve that controls the vacuum to the climate control and cruise. It should look something like this.

As I said earlier I do not know if or were this might be on your 89 but my bet is that someone out there will know. I beleive this was a common method for GM to operate the cruise and climate control

Thanks John, I was able to confirm the 89 does in fact have the same check valve located to the left of the distributor. :)

Can anyone tell me how to set the voltage on the TPS? Thanks

I can help you later tonite, hope thats ok,i'm walking out the door to start so custom paint work on my car, which is at a buddies house.

Just for general info, the minimum idle needs to be checked and or set before the TPS is set. You'll need a multi-meter (digital) or a scanner.A paper clip to fold in half for the ECM ports and a torx bit to fit the screws on the TPS switch. The aluminum bolts will strip easy if you don't use the rite size torx bit.
The mess your car was in,i would actually set the timing first, then minimum idle, and finally TPS. Thats the procedure.
If no one lists the procedures,i'll post them tonite, you'll probably be in bed due to the time difference. Hang in there bro,it's worth it to know the car is set up rite.

Thanks T.M.808
Finally got all the vacuum lines corrected and I also had to purchase an air cleaner assembly, by the way the vacuum lines were hooked up I’m not a surprised it didn’t have one.
Now when I start the car it doesn’t run very well and I have to give it a little gas to keep it running then once it starts to warm up the idle climbs up to about 1,500 RPM’s and does not come down.

Timing

Okay I went to check/adjust the timing today and disconnected the ECM 4 prong harness at the distributor per the FSM instructions and the engine would not start. Starts fine with it hooked up but no start if disconnected. Anyone have a clue why it shouldn’t start?
HELP!!! :confused
