A quick question about "numbers matching" I am aware of how to identify date codes and the like, however is it tru that the last four digets of a vin should match the block numbers?

not sure how many #s 4 or 5 but yes starting in 1960 if I remember right they started the engine block to vin # deal.
 
No, is this true? This puts a real hurdle in me finding my HP suffix block for my 68!!!!:eek

It actually has a partial stamping of the vin number on the front Rh side infront of the cylinder head, so you are not going to find your original block for your car....

Dont know how it looks or how it works but I have seen in hemmings where they have stamping kits for sale so if you found a block with the right casting number and date code you could go that route, guess that makes me leary of any high dollar #s car dont know if id be able to tell the difference between them

I am not sure about all years but for the '73 vette, the stamping would be like this 1Z3S400001 where from the "S" on will match the ending numbers of the VIN. When they changed the VIN structure in '81 it may have changed these numbers somewhat but the last 5 or 6 should match the VIN's last 5 or 6.

For the VIN numbers it wasn't called a vin until the early 80's I still call it a vin even when referring to the older cars
so what you have is the last 6-7-8 numbers and letters of the vin I cant remember right now im away from my car so I cant help there but it has a vin divertive stamped on the block and also on the transmission the frame in 3 spots and that would make it a matching numbers car to me...



First if you have to be a detective when looking for the right car when you start talking matching numbers
there's way to many definitions of MN

now you take a original corvette block that is correct for your car its casting dates are within the time line for the average car 8 weeks before the cars build date is a good average casting date on a block, you get the block machined so it has the correct broach marks and if it was machined in the 60's 70's a certain way you can do it today!
then you get the trusty stamping kit and stamp the vin numbers plant code and engine code on there
you take the car and get it judged and it passes judging and you get a top flight certificate what you have done is "restored" the car... its not a counterfeit

see how it can be screwy??

matching numbers doesn't mean **** in my book
and the price will always reflect
that's why I bought a car that needed a restoration and with me doing the work I will come out ahead it wont be done in 2 months but I will have my car in my price range..

Thanks for all the info. I was on the right track it seams. I am heading out Saturday morning to look at a 73, if all goes well, it will look good parked next to my 2001 Roadster!
