I know I've asked this before but....I'm looking for new mufflers for next year and was wondering if anybody has the high polished mufflers that Mid-American sell, and if they like them for sound :ohnoes. I'm also looking at Magflow mufflers. I'll be putting on a stock stainless system with a high flow cat. This way I'll never have to replace it again. I'm also putting larger jets in the carb, and having the distributor redone to get the most out of the system :thumb. The airflow will be improved by customizing the airfilter cover ( I'll be buying a new one so I don't ruin the original one). Any ideas? ;help

I believe that Peer81 has one of those mufflers, but I am not sure if he installed them already. Hopefully he'll chime-in.

Mike,I have magnaflows on my '81.Not high polished, but nice sound and a little resonating inside the vette

I got some Dynomax Ultraflow's from Gerry :D
Still in the box like I got them so sorry don't know the sound but the shine like a mirror!

I'd like to know what your doing to your carb. I finished reading "how to rebuild and modify Rochester Quadrajet Carburators" from Cliff Ruggles and "Rochester Carburators" by Doug Roe. The first book is easier to read with more pictures and for the E4ME carb's there isn't that much in both books but there are some small things you can change on your carb. You're free to do what you want with the secondairies but don't change to much on the primairies or even better just leave them original.
The easiest thing to do is getting a laptop with a program connected to your ECM and look what the F/A ratio is doing. When you know that you know what your options are and what you can change. :)

When I was at the the Cruisefest in Cleveland, somebody told me to replace the stock carb jets and add larger ones. They said it will improve fuel flow to compliment the new exaust system ;shrug. And to modify my airfilter cover to improve air flow.

You can take out the charcoal filter in the middle of the airfilter but I don't know what else you can do to improve the stock airfilter?
When you have better airflow and a better exhaust system, you'r ECM will know the system is running lean so the primairy rods will go up and more fuel will go through the jets. So I would say first try before you start changing things to the primairies (better don't do it at all before reading the books!) The secondairies are just like a normal carb. So when you find out the system is running lean at WOT all the time, change the rods. If it stumbles the moment you smash the gasspedal to the flow, there is more fuel entering your carb then the acc. pump can handle, and before the fuel wells are starting flowing. Some minor changes to your secondairy airflaps can do the trick (or the secondiary airflaps open to slow and you need to change the opening rate of the pull of vacuum valve).

Thing is, I've taken out the charcoal filter inside the airfilter, going for a custom true dual with x pipe so there is a change I need to do the same things.

FWIW, I have the 3 chamber flowmasters on my '73. It doesn't have what I would call resonance inside at cruise speed. The sound is very cool, not too wild and not too mild. I can carry on a conversation at 65mph with the windows up. I've had 'em on for about 8 years now of sporadic daily driving. Got about 70K on them. no signs of deterioration yet.

I have always promoted the use of a dyno's numbers on one's Vette to highlight what the engine is doing at certain RPM's. For example, if one's Vette is running fat (too rich of a fuel mixture) in a particular RPM range, then, the engine fails to produce its potential at that range.

It is somewhat costly (you'll need 3 pulls for reference, and if your lucky, 3 more pulls to verify results), but it will save you time in chasing long shot causes or heading down the wrong path on your search for the cause of this hypothetical fat condition.

When it happened to me, I found out that what was causing the engine to run rich was the Thermac temperature sensor in the Air Cleaner. It was working fine at idle, but at WOT, it was closing one of the flaps in the snorkel and causing the rich condition. :upthumbs

[and now a shameless plug for our Cruise-Fest gatherings]...dyno runs are one of the common activities arranged in our Cruise-Fest gatherings. One can sign up for the particular day, and at least find out what your Vette is doing after you have replaced half of the factory components in her...:L;LOL

Sounds like the muffler I want :thumb. I don't want to wake the dead, but able to talk to my passenger while driving down the EWAY :cool.

Hi, this is EXACTLY what I want to do with my '81, right down to the air filter, but I am not sure where to start. Any info you can share with me would be very much appreciated!
