I think it also depends on how far your commute is and along what type of roads you're going over.

If it's a short trip and the roads are friendly, I would see taking a chance with the non-runflats. However, if it was a long commute along long stretches of nothing, I would go with runflats.
 
This summer I purchased a set of Nitto 555s. What a makeover for the Vette. These tires are awesome and run under $700 at Discount Tires.

To be save I also purchased a can of GUNK flat tire so that I won't be stranded anywhere. Only about $15 for the tire repair can.

I can't tell you how happy I am with these new Nitto's!

Be careful with the tire repair stuff. Its know to screw up the pressure sensors
