I need advice on mods for my engine. I have pulled my engine out and brought it to a machine shop. I am getting it reworked (new bearings, boring out). My heads are bad and lifters/ push rods don't look good.

I have an 85 L98 (cast iron heads) and want to keep the car as a daily driver (just a little extra horsepower).

I am looking to buy edelbrook aluminum heads (victor jr) and crane cam (power max). I wanted to use the stock value covers. Eventhough I am using after market parts, I still wanted to make the car look stock.

Any advice on the parts, or the direction I am going with the engine?

Sounds like you are on your way to a great plan so far since you are after a daily driver.

An intake swap can do wonders for the TPI engines. You would be amazed at the difference that alone can do.

Roller rockers, Crane cam, headers, better heads, new internals....chip, intake mods....you will be running with the best of them.

Thanks for the info! At this point I will not be replacing the intake. My bigest fear is that my daily driver will turn into a race car. I believe that the cam will be the hardest choice. Any advice which cam? Also should I go with roller lifters? This is my first engine that I will be reworking and any advice will be great.
Thanks!!!!

replacing the intake will not turn your daily driver into a race car. The stock TPI design will limit hp/rpm to about 4200 rpms or so.

Basically if you put a new cam in there, it will be limited by the intake to its hp potential because the stock intake will not breath over 4200 rpms (making power that is)

If you convert to hyd. roller lifters, you need a hyd. roller lifter cam, retro fit lifters, work done to the lifter bore by the machine shop, etc. Comp Cams sells complete retro fit kits for your car.

IMHO, replace the intake manifold and runners with high flow ones from TPIS (base) & AS&M runners. They will looks stock but flow more air. Also have your plenum ported or exchanged from TPIS for one of theirs and slap on a 52mm throttle body.

check out http://tpis.com and look at some cam profiles for flat tappet cams and go from there.

The '85 bottom end is rock solid (crank & rods) The crank is lightweight and the rods are plenty strong too.
