My new hood design

IH2LOSE said:
Originally I was keeping the back of the hood open But after Johns comment I figured who needs that hot engine air coming at me. I do have to say at one point I was going to seal that cowl vent up (but you guys kept me on track)and it actually works quite well at getting cool air in to the cockpit.
Larry:
Two of the things that lessen performance on carbed engines are hot intake air and underhood turbulence around the carb intake. Why not add an additional layer under the "bulge", on the same level as the base of the air cleaner, so that you have a sealed pocket that the air cleaner can fit into. This way you can draw cool air from the high pressure area in front of the windshield and also prevent any under hood hot air from entering the carb or the cowl vent.
Charles

If the vacum actuated flapper scoop is still in your plans, why not open the outside corners of the back edge of the new bulge to exhaust engine heat. If you keep the openings small it may prevent contaminating the air entering your cowl vent. Maybe GM will loan you some time in the wind tunnel to experiment

I had to give up on the actuator as the stroke I needed was longer then the actuator I found,Since its closed now I may be able to do the actuator and flap buy cutting a smaller flap in it.

And yes Charles I was thinking about it last night, Actually went into the garage around 12:30 pm because it was keeping me awake to see how I could make an unabstrusive pan under the carb to seal up into the hood, Should be real trick,I just dont know if I am spinning my wheels with it

isnt that the set up that 67 heaven used? Seems to me that he had his air cleaner sealed up inside under the hood and took advantage of the front scoop...you just want yours to go the other way...backwards....am I missing something there? In that case you could just leave the back open????

Bob its in wycoff NJ ,I am told that the parking lot is an old motor vechicle location. I can give you excact location if your interested. Have you ever seen the car in the area? Or we can meet at my house.

There is a show this week end at paramus auto mall (the old malcom conner) on sunday

Just a side bar here for a second... Is Malcolm Conner gone??? I use to spend hours there as a teen looking at all the Vettes they had, new and used. Also Larry there is someone in Wyckoff that supposedly has the original Batmobile. I saw it cruise down the main street a couple of years ago. ;LOL
PS: Larry, your hood looks great. Very clean lines.

Gary yes the Malcomn Conner is gone in paramus with the Corvette salon. I was told they still have a dealer ship in the area but its not like the one on rt 17 in Paramus with all of the corvettes on the roof , its now called paramus auto mall and they still have the corvette salon.

And yes the real Bat mobile is from the north Jersey area as it does show up at the wycoff cruise and some other local shows and cruises. And the kids still flock to it with all of it chezzey looking switches.( I am actually one the kids always flocking to it)

As for my hood as I said I am done for now with it, I have to wait for my tri power set up and and once I get it,with the hood thats on it now . I will add a pan to the carb, and then put a C5's hood center section on it. I think that may look better.

They painted the bottom of the hood last night. Today he will paint the top and then buff it out on saturday.Saturday night i will get it back on the car just intime for the show on Sunday.I got new springs for the back of the car so I can raise it up a tad.I originally had a nice rake to the car but I guess iI was too light with our first guess and the car is actuall squatting in the rear now

Beautiful job Larry! It looks fantastic. Just a little more suttle as to what's hiding under the hood right? ;) It really turned out great. Have fun at the cruise fest tonight.:upthumbs

Larry,

Granted, it looks better than the round hole in the hood, but I'm having trouble with the sides and back-end treatment. I think "too squared off" springs to mind.

I tells ya when I likes 'em, and I tells ya when I'm not so sure. ;)

You said something about planning something different later anyway, right?

I think the C5 section will be better......my gal says it looks better than the hole in the hood and the air cleaner sticking out......

It looks great. You know what would be cool, Larry? The same kind of hood as your 66; a more rounded shape. Pretty easy for us to arm-chair coach, isn't it? :L

I greatley appreceate the honesty,

As soon as I get the tri power set up I will build another hood with the center section from a C5s hood. I worked my butt of on this, but it what I thought I wanted ,it does look as if it could have been stock on the car ,but this car really has No straight lines on it,No flat areas.the entire car has curves to it. so the wrightings on the wall that I must build another one.

Thanks again

Larry it really looks great but I was expecting a more gentle rise from the front to the back. I didn't think it was going to pop up so quick from the front end. When we finally meet some day you can hit me over the head for saying that. :)

A quick note,Tonight we went to a car cruise that has about 400 to 700 cars every saturday night.

Well I got the nicest comment on the car, A fellow was looking over the car and said it was a shame to ruin a classic car with a modern stereo in it,He explained the stereo looked way out of place.

I asked him if he notice the motor, frame, stance, color, dash cluster,shifter,hood,A/C, power disk brakes, speakers. He said No he just noticed the stereo. I thanked him and then explained the entire car to him.

So to me this was actually a a good comment because aparently it is looking stock to some people.

I also get lots of question about the yellow being a stock color for the car.

On the way out of the cruise we had every one and there brother trying to get us to go with them. I had 2 coffes and no restroom break so the last thing I wanted to do was speed on the road. finally we had a camaro on the left and a mustang on our right taking off at the lights, and we would pull away slow and be right next to them at the next light. My daughter called over to me (Over her Greenday CD) and said

"Smoke these chumps" and we did.

I am finally getting a good grip on how to drive it properly.as long as I slowley push into the throttle I can get plenty of traction.if I just nail it ,I lose traction and then momentum.
