Here's a quick quote from Today's Ottawa Sun. I tried to find the article online but it isn't entered as yet, I guess. The author is Vern Parker, the column is called "Classic Tale" and the article is titled...
Ottawa guy lands unique 'Vette
One of the 10,594 split window Corvette coupes building during the 1963 model year was purchased new in Grand Rapids, Mich. That car was one of the 199 Corvettes built with the Z06 performance package. Of those 199, only 60 were ordered with the optional 36 gallon gasoline tank. Where the Grand Rapids owner took the car for the next 35 years remains a mystery, until a Canadian discovered it in Southern California..... (skip ahead)

The excitement level rose once he confirmed that all the numbers matched and records indicated it had been manufactured in April 1963 in St. Louis. (skip again)

His Sting Ray left the factory in 1963 with power windows, AM/FM radio, 36-gallon gasoline tank, power brakes, fuel injection, sport suspension with heavy duty springs and no air conditioning.
Now, I'm far from expert on these things but I have the impression that the Z06 package was "radio delete" and "no power options" in 1963. Am I out to lunch??

From Michael Antonick's Black Book:
Z06 was initially a coupe-only option. Revision to $1,293.95 excluded knock-off wheels and 36-gallon tank, and was available with convertibles.
That's all there is relevant to the Z06 option, Mac. ;shrug

I dunno... I just had that impression; I could be wrong.

How did you find the article? I searched high & low... I'm gonna give up on Google!!

I would be interested in seeing the complete article. I have a lot of interest in any mid-years with big tanks.

Having owned one of the few Canadian dealer delivered big tank cars some years ago.

Be aware that the tank assy was available over the counter from GM parts dep't in those years.

There was also 2 documented well equiped '63 coupes that left the plant in '63

Take care,
Brian

Brian, 67 linked the full article in his reply and I have the hard-copy if you're interested.

Mac, there were no option restrictions as part of Z06; you could order just about any option along with Z06 (except Powerglide), and the "big tank" was only included in the option until mid-December, 1962 - at that point the N03 tank was "un-bundled" from Z06 and made a separate option, available on any coupe. Later L-88's mandated no radio/no heater ('67) and no radio in '68 and '69 (the heater was required in '68-'69 to comply with the Federal requirement for a windshield defroster).

My understanding of Z06 in MY63 is just about what JohnZ has stated above. Obviously a Z06 with conveience options would be considerably more rare because most were ordered as the basis for race cars, but that didn't mean you couldn't get a loaded Z06.

Thanks for the clarification, guys! :)
I like learning; it keeps me young. :D
