Here's a worst case scenario. 90s still had the black body rub strips and different "gills". What if it's really a 91-96, stolen with title and VIN plate from a salvage 90 bought at auction. Could have happened years ago when all the auction activity took place. Seller may not even know. Make anyone nervous?

Yea!!!!!! Make's me Creinge!!! I auto CK'd it not much InFo Before 96 ??????? Il. Title - Ia. title and back to Il. ????? Dealer's Don't have to Title vehicle's State to State, Unless you are trying to Wash Somthing!!!!!!! This is a Thing, that can be done in some paper work that is Iffy!!!!! to Wash Salvage,Miles,Ins.Damage,Stolen!!!!! If I was buy'n this car I would ck every vin # on Car!! (Don't want Law Dog's comeing and Taken it!!)I deal with outher State Titles all the time and have book's that fill's me in on outher State Title and Reg. Law's!! I use Auto Check!! Seem's to be the most Acq.!! P.S. the Guy you are Buy'n from, Probly didn't know!! He was told that and didn't ck it out!! the Miles Exempt late in game! (You Don't Exempt miles on Corvette if there right!!) Regardless of age!! Should been a Warnning Flag if he were ck'n his Paper Work Out!! You can however can hope for Best or not Take it!! ( He However can File Sute on Whoever Changed Speedo and Exempted it !! Why was it Exempted if Miles were Right!! If it was done to Decive It's Acc. Miles , It's Froud ! Regardless of Year or Model !! and He's probly got a case, unless he's the one that done it!! :upthumbs gmjunkie!!

Actually I did the Auto Check; not Carfax. It was from experian. However, if I purchase the car with an AOK from Autocheck and it is deemed to be stolen material with them giving it the AOK; seems to me that the Buyback protection they offer would safeguard me there, right? And I could retrieve my money back from them yes? I read exhaustively through the terms and conditions. So, with that safeguard is it worth the risk?

If someone is upgrading the car to look newer and doing it RIGHT they would replace all those indicators/remnants that would clue people in on it being a 90. IF they were doing it right. I hear your warnings and yes, they have definitely jolted me some for sure... but it sure does appear that I have the safeguard in my pocket with the AutoCheck from Experian.... any comments???

From your stand point Id say Yes, and you probly not have a problem!! From Mine I deal in 25-60 vehicles wholsale a month!! And 2-3 a month Retail mostly by my self!! I pride my self in Quality!! and I don't have time for vehicles with Background Problem's :upthumbs gmjunkie!!

Chevyaddict,
I'd run away from this one. I haven't read the whole thread, but it seems to me there are just too many questions AND discrepancies in the information you've been able to obtain. I don't think it's worth the worry you'll inevitably feel after you make this transaction. It'll take a long time before you feel comfortable about owning this car. Just my two cents......

In Illinois, they won't but the miles on the title if over 10 years old. Pretty sure it's 10 years at least. I wrote a letter and sent it in with my title application practically begging them to put the mileage on the title for my Pace Car.(OK older than 10) Came back blank.

Not that familar with C4s but aren't the body colored rub strips actually part of the lower panels?

Is it me or does the wear on this tire look uneven? Possibly more problems with the "good rubber" on the car??
From all the posts I have read I think logically you should pass. But the heart wants what the heart wants.

Good Luck with whatever decision you make.

Yes!!! It's Towed out! Need's tow in!! Maybe To much -Camber !! :upthumbs gmjunkie!!

I just realized something.... for the car to have 157,000 miles on it in 9 years, that averages to approx 17,400 miles per year. That is EXCESSIVE... even for year round driving! If what you guys say is true and most people wouldn't typically drive the car in the winter.... I almost think it impossible for it to have that many miles on it in 1999......

Just more food for thought.

He just sent me a crapload of more pics!! I'm downloading them all now... stay tuned!

17,400 miles is not alot if one of the owners was a salesman. There is guy around here who drivs his 95 year round. I have seen him out in some nsaty snow storms with it. It is not entirely out of the realm. I still think you should pass on it.

Reported at two diffrent Auto auction's and DMV in Two states in 1999 with 150,000+ miles Leades me to beleve that it's had a Switch-A-Roo!! Auto Auction's have not been that Laxed in the last 5 yr's. or the last 8-10 yr. for that matter!! Or the DMV's for that matter and I know Il is on top of it, I was a Dealer there in the 70's and thay were a pain in the Wazoo then over paper work!! My wifes old Chevy pick up she bought new in 84 has 451,000 mi. and in the last 6 yr. it just go's 12 mi to the dump and back or to the tire shop less than 80 mi a Month!! :upthumbs gmjunkie!!

Well... if that is true then I'm protected with the AutoCheck buy back and will pursue recourse that way. The underneath pictures of this car rock! No cancer, practically no leaks - no undue gunk ..... at the same time you can tell it hasn't been cleaned either. I've decided to follow through with it; if I get burned so be it.... its only money!! Thanks all so very much. I'm picking it up on the 3rd and driving it back... once I get it home I'll give you guys an update!!!

Good luck with your new purchase! I've been getting the bug to buy a C4 myself lately. Would really like a ZR1....

:D :beer :_rock

This will be me in less than two weeks!! :lou I feel good... after seeing these other pictures I'm confident the car is worth the money. I just looked on-line at the Autotrader and the least expensive convt within 300 miles of me was an 89 for $14,995... there are some coupes for sale... that one red one I posted awhile back with 135000 with all the mods for $5200; there is a 91 for $8500 with 143,000 miles but its a coupe. I think all in all I'm getting a smokin deal; even if it has 170,000 on it. :D

As I mentioned, above, the really "key" price, here, is the "no lower than" price: that is, what you see really rough or, esentially, almost parts cars go for. On EBay, what I have seen is that a running C4 rarely SEEMS to go for anything much less than $4K, and even a pretty rough one (like my '89 Ebay rat) rarely goes for less than $5k----and those are coupes, not convertibles (which are pricier). I'm sure there are exceptions, of course, but after three months of looking that's what I found. So, a complete and decent looking and running complete convertible for about $7.3K is really pretty good. I'm glad you stuck with it and took the car, but even if it is not what you expect this is not a financial disaster by any means. Frankly, my own experience has been that when you're in the market for cars like ours you actually do best on Ebay, for a variety of reasons.

Thanks Chris.... the thing is I was sent even more pictures and the car looks GREAT! Especially the interior - plus it has new exhaust, new brakes EVERYTHING works... truly just can't beat it. I've been looking on ebay as well... precisely why I bought it! Frankly I thought for sure I was going to be outbid.... my high price was $7500.

Hey Chuck I've got a BIG HUGE MONSTROUS SMILE at the moment. I'm so giddy now its silly.... I CAN'T WAIT! Thanks muchas!

Get one ! Get one! Ya only live once!!!!!!! I make these dumb decisions all the time to buy things I don't need and so far [knock on wood] its never bitten me in the tooshy! I look at it this way always.... these cars hold most of their value so worst case scenario you could always sell. Thats my motto. :D

Dawn,

So when do I get to see both the 81 and this new one? I need advance notice so I can have my 96 cleaned before you see/drive it.

Off to Baltimore in the morning.

Later,
Lanny
