Need an opinion on a C5

I think I found a C5 that may be worth diving into. I found a 2000 Torch red vert, 6spd...The body looks like it is in great shape. I couldnt find a scratch on it. The interior is very clean. Here is where the curveball comes. The car has 39XXX miles on it. I can tell it was a daily driver. By looking under the hood, it is not the cleanest i have seen. I am not too technical when it comes to looking under a hood, but what I believe are the headers had some rust on them. They are the 4 pronged fork looking things coming out of each side of the engine. This was the only bad thing I found on the car. I immediately dismissed the car altogether but now that I am thinking about it, if it isnt a huge thing to fix, I could go for it. My only questions are, 1) how the hell does rust end up under the hood like that, and 2) what other problems could there be that I am not seeing right away?

Any thoughts?

That 2000 C5 may have been built & bought in 1999.
Which means... 2003 - 2002 - 2001 - 2000 - 1999
Thats actually not too bad.

If you are buying the car from the original owner, he/she will be able to tell you the most about the car.
Look over the service records and make sure that it was serviced & on time.
Make sure you go on a long drive.
Check everything you can. (Dont forget the tires, and the weather stripping at high speeds)

How old is the owner?
What is his/her reason for selling?
What is the asking price?

Unfortunately the car was at a dealership. I was passing by and thought i would check it out. I would much rather buy from an original owner then through a dealer.

All things considered you should not pay more than $31K. If the dealer insists he needs more than that - than he's buried in this car and that's not your problem. Simply walk away and keep looking elsewhere. If the dealer calls you back and agrees on a price of $31K or less - than tell him that just for being a pain in the a**, the $31K will now include sales tax, plates and any other costs associated with DMV.

Here's the thing to keep in mind. You're the customer and all the dynamics are stacked in your favor. Be patient, be reasonable and eventualy you'll get the car you want for a fair price.

Now you're cooking - you'll do just fine. And don't get overly concerned with the milage. Like LEEJANDZ said -averaged out over four years that's still less than 10,000 miles per year. Don't worry - there's a C5 out there for you. Sometimes the hunt can be fun.

Let me get one thing straight.

You found a 2000 C5 convertible 6 speed with 39k.
Did it have the suspension package?

What was the dealerships asking price?
I would guess somewhere around $35-37k

You would get lucky if you could get it for $31k OTD.

The dealership probably took it in for around $23-26k + reconditioning fees.

By the way... the extended warranty costs the dealership around $300.
Then they charge you somewhere around $1500-1700.

Since we're on the subject of pre-owned C5's, I have a question. I'm looking to sell mine in the very near future I was wondering if anyone could tell me what I should expect to receive. KBB is giving, in my opinion, a very low figure as far as outright resale. I feel that KBB gives general figures based on data nationwide but I know that these cars hold a better value to true enthusiast. I have 11,5K on my '01 coupe.....babied since day 1, garaged kept....can I get mid 30's?

you are correct lee...The guy mentioned 38K which i thought was crazy. Kerbeck in Atlantic city is selling a 2001 vert with almost the same options and 16k miles. They are selling that one for 39k. 39 is a little out of range but if i can get this clown to about 32K i might be in business.

When I bought my '99 Coupe I wrote the VIN number down and took it to my Chevrolet dealer. He looked it up on the computer and printed me out the vechicle history. I was able to see its history as far as dealer visits and the reason for each. I bought mine from a local lot that Ive known for ever. Even so and although he gave me a really indepth history of the car you cant beat seeing when, why, and how often the car was at the dealer for maintenance. You might try that.

CORVETTE only dealers will charge more for their cars, but the market is inflated artificially.
Dealerships will use KBB or other guides as the "general" market value.
If you were to tell any dealership that you wanted $35k for your car they would laugh at you.
Thats just how it is.



In your case, you have a 1 owner car that has been taken care of.
You should be able to receive top dollar for your VETTE.
But expect around $32k for private party & $25 for trade in ACV.

You will be hard pressed to find a buyer for yours at $35k with CHEVY offering 0% for 60 months on new VETTES.

i dont know how the deal is going,i just want to add that when i bought my 99' a year and a half ago, it had 28,000 miles on it, it had been hit before but fixed very well, it ran so good i went for it, i have had it for 1 1/2 years, i race it about once a month,at the track anyway, strarted to mod it a year ago,like one said before, the maintanence records were good, i have never had one problem with this car,all the normal stuff was taken care of under the original warrenty, i also got the extended warrenty,i guess what im trying to say is what was said earlier,dont worry about the milage,as long as records are good.there someone around here with 150,000+ miles on the car,and they race sometimes:eek minor problems,look thru past threads. so dont be to scared to buy a used car,later Todd.

Have you considered a brand new VETTE.
The 50th anniversary editions are nice and sure to be a collectors item.
You cant really argue with 0% APR for 60 months.

The rates on a used VETTE will be higher than 0%

I was considering a new one but even with 10K down my payments were going to be outrageous. Last month Rick Daniels was offering 7K off of a new one. I should have jumped on it but things have been crazy at work and i was not able to jump on it. What I was thinking about doing was leasing one and then refinancing the remaining balance when the lease was up. I plan on having the car forever so the miles would not effect me.
