Need help 86 OD relay wiring problem

I've had my vette since April. What a blast! Ihave read amny things in the forum before as I've tried to provide some TLC to a lady 18 years old. I've managed to put new outer door weatherstrips in, change all fluids (except the tranny....that's tomorrow) repair many loose nuts/bolts, replace fuel pump, replace main fusible link to ECM. It's been a labor of love.

My problem now is that when I saw some loose wire ends coming out of the OD relay, I loosened from bracket & when I did, it fell off in my hand. I now have 6 wires to go back into new connector, but am not sure which go where.

Help!!!!!! I have an 87 service manual, but it doesn't show the same colors as my 86 has. (2 green, 1 tan/brown, 2 pink/blk ? & 1 brown) Any one know the correct sequence of these in connector (A-E)

Bob, I can't find anything called OD relay, or overdrive relay. Can you be more specific, and where did you find this in the 87 manual? I have one as well. I have an auto so, I'm not familiar with what you are referring to, but I'll try to help if you can point me in the right direction.

Ok, I'm looking at the 86 and 87 side by side. Of course, they look nothing alike :L So, I'll try to give you info that will translate, too bad I suck at electrical stuff a nd reading schematics, but I'll give it a whirl.

From the ECM I show for the 86:

Speed unit, A10, 437 brn, to vehicle speed signal

There is NO C8 in the 86 manual

TCC control, A7, 422 tan/blk, to D on the tranny, splitting out to the 15 pin ALCL, goes to F on that connector. (this shows as going to D in the 87, and to F on the ALDL in the 87 Manual)

AT overdrive switch signal, C7, blk/ lt.blu is exactly the same in both.

IGN 1, ppl., goes to A on the trans block ABCD

Only A and D have wires going to them on the 86 diagram, and, rather than the ABCD shown in the 87, the diagram shows as DCAB.

I appreciate your help, but still no luck with my problem....Hopefully someone with an 86 & 4+3 will go out & pop their hood & look for me how their's is wired...:confused

If you have an 86 w/ a 4+3 you're looking for a relay bolted to the firewall on the drivers side, beside the brake booster (actually there are 2 relays there, the front one is the OD relay <closest to engine> & the back one <closest to the firewall> is the fuell pump relay.

Please reply back to me with the color & sequence of the wires going into that connector on the OD relay ;help

Ok. This is what I have for my 86 4+3. The colors have probably faded, because mine looked different.

From the passenger side:
Orange
Brown
Orange/Black
White/Black
Green & Green

Your pink is probably my orange, and my wires were very dirty so I may have missed the black stripe on the second. On the last connection, both greens go into the same hole.

What I think happens with these wires is that the heat has caused the wire coating to shrink and draw away from the ends of the wires, leaving them exposed. I had a short in my fuel pump relay due to this, and now I see that the OD relay has the same problem. Time to wrap some electrical tape...

Great, I can't wait to try this combo. My wire colors were pretty faded, but I think my problem will be solved w/ this info. I'll try tomorrow & let you know the results.

86 OD realy problem solved

You were correct & I thought I had given you an update on getting this problem solved. It works great. Here's how it should be:

From the passenger side of car:

Pink/Black = Term E on relay
Brown = Term D
Pink/Black = Term C
Tan/Black = Term B
Green & Green = Term A

Heat/age has caused the wire coating to shrink and draw away from the ends of the wires, leaving them exposed. The fuel pump relay had the same shrinkage issue due to this, and rather than risk the problem I did with the OD relay, I used some liquid electrical tape.. . working great so far

I also picked up an '86 service manual @ the vette show, pricey, but brand new & invaluable. Thanks again to everyone for their help. If you own a vette, you need to be a supporting member on this site!!!!!
