i have a 1990 automatic vet i think it comes stock with 245 hp and im trying to gain 55 extra hp just wonderin what the cheapest route would be besides nitrous thanks

besides nitrous huh.... i would say... headers, cat back exhaust, k&N with open air lid, descreen MAF, and some good tuning should get you an extra 55

just wanted to have a 300 hp engine
probly put nitrous in after like a 100 shot thanks for the help appreciated it

90 has cast pistons so be careful about running more than 100shot, they may blow.

To get about 50hp, I figure you can get some longtube headers, Random Tech cat, whatever catback you like (only diff is sound between all of them). The exhaust stuff should get about 20-30hp.

Then you will need intake mods. You can port and polish the plenum/runners/base and that will get you really close, but still may not get you 300 at the crank. Best bet would be to port the plenum, get some aftermarket runners like AS&M, and get a bigger base from TPiS, Lingenfelter, or Edelbrock. You do those and youll get your 300 at the crank.

1.6RR would be relatively cheap and easy to install as well, and should give 10-15hp.

read these carefully

heres the siamess base, notice you lose at lower rpms and gain slightly at high rpms
first dyno run

http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~davis/z28/winter01/dyno/dyno010511/webpage010511.html

now look at the ADVANTAGE THE LONG FREE FLOW RUNNERS of the stealth ram, HAVE OVER THE SIAMESE BASE. keep in mind they gained 16hp at 6000rpm by siamessing the base BUT THEY GAINED 39 ADDITION HP (total 56hp over the stock TPI) WITH THE STEALTH RAM at 6000 rpm and went on to gain a total of 66 hp over the siamesed intake (total over the stock tpi is more than 100 hp at that point but thats really meaningless because the TPI stopped flowing any increased air at about 4700rpm......... yet youll have to admit a 60-70hp gain aint bad for any intake swap

second dyno run

the combo of a good port job on your TPI intake or a stealth ram, a good MATCHING cam , like the

and headers will easily put you over 300hp

Grumpy:

the gains of the Stealth Ram look impressive but will they be realized with an auto trans? (Mine shifts at (aprox) 5000 rpm at wot.)

"the gains of the Stealth Ram look impressive but will they be realized with an auto trans? (Mine shifts at (aprox) 5000 rpm at wot."

engines are a combo of interdependent parts that must be designed so that all the parts match as to rpm range, displacement and air flow, to get the best results, you must match the cams timeing, heads port flow exhaust scavageing rpm tuned range dynamic compression and the intakes flow and rpm range for the best results, the cars gearing and trans have a large effect on where the engine spends much of its time in the rpm range,
IF YOUR NOT WILLING to install a shift kit or manually shift the transmission while racing or otherwise change the engine/trans average rpm range and shift points youll be better off SERIOUSLY porting the stock intake and installing the hotter roller cam,the STEALTH RAM will EASILLY increase the hp but as Ive said several times almost all the gains are above 4400rpm so youll not be useing the intakes effective rpm range letting the trans auto shift at 5000rpm.
a correctly ported TPI base, plenum and runners can gain you about 20hp, the cam is an easy 35- 40hp, that will get you the 55 hp (at the flywheel) your after, and would be the way to go if your after max results for the money and willing to settle at that HP, level, a set of AFR190cc heads can gain you another 35-40hp over the stock heads. headers and a free flow exhaust will get you about 20hp on average.
acording to both my engine building experiance and my computer programs the CAM and AFR heads by themselve as likely to result in a 75hp gain, CORRECTLY porting the tpi intake is documented at a 20hp gain, so your easily over your goal if do those three, alone, but if your going that far ,Id suggest you look again at the stealth ram and raiseing your average rpm range with a shift kit and manuall controls on shift points and possiably a 3.73/4.11 rear gear

dang you guys helped me out alot glad u guys know what your talkin about im probly gonna eventually shoot for more than 300 hp but thats my little goal for right now

by the way the vet i bought it had a stalker body kit on it i was just wonderin what you guys thought of it

heres a link to the kit that i have btw the way thats not my car on this webpage

thanks again

Vader,

you think with those mods you can get the 55 hp?

i got the edlebrock base SLP runners and another plenum all ported and polished ready to go with a 52mm or 58mm tb. opting for the 52mm from what i hear would gain more.

so with my proposed mods:
edlbrock big mouth base
SLP runners
plenum *all of above ported polished*
52mm TB.
ZZ406 cam
1.6 RR's and Roller Lifters
punched over stock 87 heads ported & polished
TB Bypass
open air box w/ K&N filter
descreened MAF
muffler eliminators

tranny mods will be a trans-go kit 2800'ish stall and a hayden tranny cooler. i know these don't really matter for HP but will for ET.

what do you think i'll get on average at the crank? just a guess. my guess would be around 70'ish? i'd really be happy with 100hp. but i'll stay conservative with 70'ish what do you guys think? this is my winter project. :)

does the rear Y Pipe really add that much over stock? i think stock is 2 1/2" if i goto a 3" rear Y Pipe would it add more and does it match up right to the cat so it will bolt together?

i'm trying to put a game plan together such as Violator and just get some kind of estimation. i would be happy hitting high 12's on all motor with my vette (for now) so i can move on the the LT1 or LS1 conversion in my 82 Z/28.

thanks!

I dont have the specs on that cam in front of me, but I do believe you should get 12s.

With the 87's 128 heads, did you have the intake ports polished or have you not done it yet.

Mic,

Those are some nice mods! I think you've got mid 12's with those mods at the very worst.

Are you going to get a customized burned chip to take full advantage of your new toys?

Vader,

haven't pulled the heads apart yet to do the porting and polishing. i'm just collecting parts still.

Edmond,
yes i plan on getting a chip custom burnt to take full advantage of this setup i'm planning.

Just FYI then, you dont want to polish the intake port. Polish the exhaust port only.

If the surface on the intake port is rougher, it leads to better A/F mixture and atomization.
