The battery on my mid year is giving me fits over the positive battery cable constantly being corroded. I clean it, put battery terminal protective coating on it and a couple months later it's corroded. I've cleaned the cables and posts to no avail! Any ideas?
Thanks

Dennis,

This is a big problem. Like you, I have used several terminal coatings. Even plain grease works pretty well but nothing seems to be perminent. I have settled on just keeping it clean. I pressure wash it and apply grease every few months. Also I mix up a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water and pour it over the top of the battery and the terminals. This neutralizes the acid and stops the corrosion. I usually try to pour it on the battery tray and hardware too then rinse with water.

Battery Corrosion

Thanks Tom,
I do the samething, clean with baking soda & water every couple of months. I'd hoped there were something else to check. Thought maybe I had some bad connections.

I've tried those plastic covers too but I think all they do is hide the problem until it's too late. I just checked Eastwood because they make a good battery tray coating but they don't list any terminal coatings.

I thought Vasoline (petroleum jelly) was the stuff to use. :confused

And don't act like Len now and make some snide remark about what else Vasoline is good for! :eyerole

That works well too.

Aren't you proud of me Ken. I didn't say anything stupid. :D

The factory cure for this when the car was built was felt washers soaked in hypoid lube (75W90 gear lube); works for me. :)

Changing battery

We just purchased a 1966 Corvette. The battery needs to be replaced and I am not sure how to get the battery out. The car did not come with an owners manual so I am a little lost. It looks like there is a panel in the wheel well that is removable. Where do you place the jack?

To tamskib,
If your car is a non airconditioner it comes out through the top on the passenger side. Only A/C cars had an opening in the fender well on the drivers side to remove the battery.

For years I have just coated everything with a thin coat of grease. It seems to keep the air off and I never have any corrosion. I disconnect the batt, clean up the terminals and posts and coat everything then re connect. Those comercially available coatings just seem to create a good hiding place for corrosion to fester.
