need help setting timing

Jack and John

i'll run out later and try to find Speedy Dry, but since we have two cats (and a dog). we already have kitty litter around so since it works it will be fine for this one time use to clean up.

thanks!

oh, one more question for this thread..........

I just replaced the t-stat this morning and repainted the t-stat housing last night.
just finished putting it all back together and am now ready to refill the coolant that drained out.
I bought a gallon of anti-freeze. I know to mix it 50/50. car is cold after sitting all night.
Do I just pour it into the expansion tank until the tank is half full?
do it with the car running or off?

btw, on my radiator petcock under the car Terry mentioned it was suppose to have a hose sticking out of the middle of the petcock but mine doesn't. Do I need to get a new hose or it's not a big deal? the only problem I see without the hose is getting my fingers wet when closing it while it's still draining and a bit of splashing as it drains into the tub - not a big problem on either really.

Barry, when filling the coolant, I usually fill the tank half way with the engine off and let things settle for a few minutes. Then I start the car with the tank cap off and refill as necessary once the themostat opens.

I have never had to "burp" the system doing it this way. After a short cruise around the block, I let the car cool down and check it once more and refill as necessary..

thanks! :)

just what I needed to know.. i'll do just that way.

it's strange, in my Shop Maunual, it tells everything except how to refill the coolant. Tells you to do it and how much, but not how. I guess through the expansion tank is the only way so they figure if you can't figure it out you are too dumb to work on the car yourself (pointing at myself...... ;LOL )

FYI Barry, since you are becoming more of a DIY-er - If you have drained your system sufficiently for some reason (not too likely for a t-stat swap) you won't be able to initially fill it via the surge tank. Most folks "fill" their C2 rads in such a situation by either filling the system via the intake manifold, t-stat off, or down the upper rad house, once that is removed from the t-stat housing, and held slightly upward.

Glad to see your pleasure at having done the timing yourself, with good results. I recognize the feeling, we all do, and we are very happy to see you have it too.

Jack, I understand what you are saying.
Not that much got drained out. In fact, I must not have drained enough considering how much spilled out when I first pulled the housing off but i'll remember your info for when I eventually drain, flush, and refill the entire system in the future for cleaning.
:)

2) Does having Pertronix ignition change any of the rules/procedures when setting timing/dwell? I guess dwell would be a non issue with Pertronix...right?

TIA

Danno

You won't have to set dwell - just timing. :)
