I've been working on adjusting the timing on my 85 L98. The timing was so far off, that I'm suprised that she started every morning( but that's another thread).

My question: do the hash marks on the timing indicator indicate 1* or 2 *? According to the documentation that I have, the car should be timed 6* from TDC on spark plug #1. I did this (assuming each has mark is 1*) and the car starts fine, but it idles @ about 850-1000 RPM, and will idle for a minute, then cut off. I can prevent the shutdown, by leaning on the gas, but...

In a previous thread, several people have noted timing their cars at up to 9* from TDC. Assuming that each mark is 1*, then there are no room on the scale for 9*.

So...what's the truth here? 1* or 2* per hash mark?

HELP!!!

and Thanks

On the 85 the wire is Brown with a Black Trace. Be sure the car is at operating temp when timing. I used to run at 10 degrees before having to take it down to 6 after doing some mods and chip to avoid detonation. Each mark is 2 degrees. I would suggest setting the proper timing and then using the proper procedure for setting the idle and check TPS setting then take it from there.
Hope it helps some.
