I'm looking for a shop or mechanic to change the intake manifold gasket on my 86. Cars all original with about 17K so I want everything back together exactly as it comes apart. Any recomendations?

Dont think it would be too hard of a job to do it yourself. I would imagine a fresh gasket from felpro or one of the places, a set of tools, internet/service manual and a weekend set aside should be all you need. Just my personal opinion to save money as shop prices are outrageous, for my budget at least. How bad is this leak?

It's a small leak, backside, near the firewall. Hardly noticable, but I want to fix it before it becomes a problem. Your right about pricing, the local chevy shop wanted $700. They have worked on some of my other cars and the quality of work wasn't that great, so I just don't trust them to put everything back right.

I should take vett boy's advice and check with the local club.

^That too. Im a college student, so pretty much all work/repairs have been done by me on my '94. Im sure i have saved hundreds, if not thousands from labor.

Assuming you don't want to take this task on yourself here's a couple of reputable shops that are considerably closer to you:

ESP (Enhanced Street Performance)
12 Beverly Drive
Sterling, MA. 01564
tel # 978-422-7273
http://www.enhancedstreetperformance.com/
Tell them you were referred by the Corvette guys from CT that were there for "Dyno Day" on May 8th (in the rain!).

This one has an excellent reputation but may not work on C4's (C5's & C6's are his specialty) but wouldn't hurt to ask:
SLOWHAWK PERFORMANCE INC.
Telephone: Shop (508) 659-4454 Fax (508) 659-4456
Address: 30 First st. , Unit 8, Bridgewater MA, 02324

Longer trip but Bolton CT for the Corvette Connection
or
Newington CT for the Corvette Center
Both of the Connecticut shops can handle anything on a C4 although the best choice would be the Corvette Center for a C4 (ask for Ray)

The leak you describe is not uncommon and shouldn't cause a problem driving.

I think Slowhawk only works on C5's and 6's if your near Brockton...give Les Lucier a call, his garage leaves a lot to be desired for appearance but he is very knowledgeable on Chevrolets ..been racing Vettes since the early 60's ...you might also want to get in touch with the Diva...Elaine at Corvette Mikes...in Plymouth >>> she knows alot of people who can point you in the right direction, her connections in the Corvette community is amazing.
