My original '67 radio has a problem which I believe traces down to the volume control. It occasionally plays normally for a short time and then gets real quiet. I could sometimes recover it by cycling the volume on and off a few times, but after a while even that was not very successful. I pulled it out and cleaned it with electronic contact cleaner and that did not help. I know it runs about $400 to have these things serviced so I tried to do what I could on my own. When it does play ok AM and FM are fine.
So, I had an opportunity to pick up a second radio for a reasonable price ($250), which the original owner says was bench tested and worked perfectly, he pulled it out a while back for a more modern radio. I don't know the guy from Adam but he seems to be a reasonable guy.
I put in the newly purchased radio recently and FM works well from a volume perspective (my other radio's problem). Unfortunately the AM is completely dead, when you switch it over to AM it's like there are absolutely no AM channels out there anywhere up and down the dial. Physically the radio dial switches over and the FM music goes away as you would expect. I've verified the antenna is properly connected and I've tried trimming the signal with the screw near the tuner, but there is no improvement. I would think I would have something weak regardless of how bad the trim might have been but there is nothing at all. I put the old radio back in with the same config and AM is there so I know the antenna is good. If the antenna is not hooked into the new radio there is no FM (I tried that just to be sure it was right). I've cycled the AM/FM switch many times to try to clear the contacts if that was the problem. I also have opened the new radio and checked/cleaned contacts with no improvement (or further degradation thankfully)
The guy swears to me that he checked it completely before shipping and "everything worked". Is it possible that I am missing something or is there something more I can check myself?
Now I have 2 radios but still no happiness!
