I replaced my front brakes and rotors yesterday. Now I get a squeak or metal to metal sound when I first press on the brakes (Before contact of pads to rotor) or release them. I hear the sound just for a second when I release the brakes and then it goes away as I speed up. I also think I noticed it once or twice when in a turn. Anyone know what this might be? The brakes work great with no chattering during a stop, and 60 to zero pretty smooth with heavy brake pressure. Suggestions greatly appreciated.

Brake squeak

I've read that the anti-squeak springs can be put in 'wrong' (that is not engaged) and that will cause the brakes to squeak. When I replace my pads, the springs did not 'engaged' properly and it took a little care to get them positioned (I'd taken note of the spring prior to removing them).
I don't have a photo but you might find one with a search. Basically the springs just put a little radial pressure on the pads to hold them toward the center of the wheel axis.
Hope this help.

Sorry should have been clear that this was the front brakes and its a 95 LT-1.

Did you clean the caliper brackets where the pads contact? They need a small dab of caliper/pad grease on the ends of the pads.

Jedi,

I had the same issue. There are some small tin-looking plates that fit between the top and bottom of the brake pads where they set into the caliper (I don't know what they're called, they don't appear in the manual). I would almost bet they are rubbing on the rotor causing your metal to metal sound. With the wheel off, try spinning the rotor and see if they make contact with it. I had to tweek mine a bit but, I got it to stop rubbing.

Brake squeal is caused by vibration between the brake pads, rotors, and brake calipers.

Having the brake rotors refinished or trued (machining a small layer of the metal away from the disc brake rotor to make it smooth and "true" again) and a thin layer of a silicone compound placed on the back of the brake pads are a great way to reduce the squeal if the semi-metalic pads are the culprit of the noise and not due to a worn out disc brake pad.
