I am so pumped about the new building. The 30' x 24' 3 car garage we built a few years ago got small fast, now we are putting up a 30' x 40' metal building.
Slab is done. Waiting on the building now. Should be here by Nov 4th.

 is on ice

show some pictures when you can. My garage is 30 x 40..you'll like the amount of room it provides.

Thanks.

My wife will be happy to be able to park her car in the garage now that the 1952 8N tracktor has a new home.

I will be taking a lot of pics.

now if would just stop raining in the Houston area

Some PIcs

Raising the first arch was the most difficult part. once the second one is in place it became much more sturdy. Up to three arches now. Slowly but surely, little bit each weekend, it willl be done.
DANG!! tastes soo good after a hard days work climbing scaffoling all day.

About how much did it cost? I am thinking of building something similar to park our travel trailer, car hauler and cargo trailer in. I built a 30x50 pole barn with a 10 foot overhang down one side. I paid about $10k to have the building constructed and about $3k for the concrete floor a few years later. The room is great, the only problem is you fill it up with projects - right now I've got 6 cars (including the three corvettes (one of the 4-post lift) and all of my wood working equipment in that. I also have an old 24x30 garage/workshop next to it that I made out of an old chicken coupe after I discovered that it had a concrete floor. I have two cars, a welder, air compressor and a lot of my tools in that one. I also have an old barn that has another car and my old Farmall tractor in it. I also have several old trucks and all of our newer vehicles (except the Z06) sitting outside. Thats the problem with being in the country, you can accumulate a lot of stuff - I don't know how in the heck I would ever be able to move!!

that looks like one of those US buildings that I have seen on TV lately.

All in all it ran about 10K, 7K for the Steel Master building. Thats the deliverd price, tax and all.

Hey Ritchie,
is that the industrial base connector that you are using on your foundation? I am getting ready to start my building. It too is a 40 x 30 Steel Span. How hard was it to put up the building? I met with a contractor this weekend to start the show on mine. I'll be doing custom end-walls so that it will match the house. Cannot wait till it is done so the vettes will have a home.

Thanks.

We put up a 30 x 26 metal building this summer. Did all the work ourselves was it a blast. It was like a big erector set. Make sure you check into the Wayne-Dalton garage door openers. No center track. The opener mounts above the door. I love mine. Good luck and be safe. Steel hurts.

billybeau1,

Thanks. i just got the quote from the contractor. $3305 for the concrete work. I buy the concrete. $4100 for the end wall construction and erection of the building. I buy the materials for the end walls. So that comes to $7400 for labor. Is that a resonable price? Concrete is around $85.00/cu yard. looks like i'll need around 25 cu yards so that would be $2125.

H.D., Yes I paid $84 per yard. My total concrete bill was $4100 which included 6 piers. The village wanted them 42" down. Sounds like your in the ball park

I'm back... Beeen very buisy at work with the new yaer and changing the data tables over to 2005 format and at home working on the shop and tinkerin' around the garage.

Well.. We started to put up the building ourselves and got 5 arches up. It was going toooo slooowww so I called the salesman for the building and asked him if he could line me up w/ a contractor, he did, I got a crew of 4 for 65$ / hr. It worked out to be one arch per hour pace and an 11 hour work day, now we have 15 arches up and 5 more to go. The same contractor is coming by today to put up the final 5 arches. We where going to put up the last 5 but he left some tools behind and told me he would pick them up and asked if we wanted hin to go ahead adn finish it, I said "yes I do". So that means I have to take 1/2 day vacation today
My Corvete is under cover, at last I can take the Tyvek off (poor mans car cover).

Heavey Duty,

Yup, we have the industrial base plates. I hammer drilled the 82 holes myself, with one bit. Dang!!! That was fun.
Our building came with strapping to maintain 24" centers but we never used them, the base plates kept everythjing in check good enough.
I will do most of the final tightening from the inside usein a 12pt 11/16 socket.
(The nuts go on rounded side toward the panel.)
I bought too much scaffolding but that is not a bad thing I suppose.
I had to drill holes in the sky lite panels. Used welders vise grips to hold the sky lite panel to a metal one and drilled at a low speed, they came out perfect. At first I couldnt find the drill bit then I noticed it was still in the drill, wasted 1/2 hour there LOL.
Here are pics I took last weekend.

Thanks Ritchie, I ordered my plates this past Monday and pick them up the end of the month. I only live 10 hours away from Pittsburgh and to pay $700.00 to ship 10 base plates was out of the question. Plus it gives me an excuse to get the Dodge CTD on the road.

I have hired a contractor to do the concrete work and to put the building up. I figure I can do the end walls since I'll be using T-11 siding, install the windows, install both the walk through doors and roll-up door.

Sounds like you got a good deal on the labor. Just to put up the building is going to cost me ~$3700. But, if they bend/break something then they own it. I am hoping to have it completed by the end of May.

I too will have to put up the end walls. Just dont know what to go with.

Was thinking about putting four telephone type poles at each corner to support a set of roller doors like on a barn or hangar and frame up the top part with a vent section at the very top. BUt I dont know. End walls are not load bearing so the sky is the limit there. fun fun fun, love biuilding stuff.

Putting the end walls up should be easy. What I am go to do is use 3/8" concrete expansion bolts to anchor either 2/4s or 2/6s to the concrete floor. That should give me a good solid anchoring point for the walls. You can plum the floor boards in by hanging the plum at the very top of the building where the top of the wall will tie in with top of the building and marking on the floor Then do the same at each end of the arch. Then put you a chalkline through the 3 marks on the floor for referance. Depending on what you use for your exterior wall, (plyboard, chip board with alum siding) and how thick it will be you do another chalkline. The inner most chalkline is where you put your floor boards. That way you don't have a wall with the leans. You will have to drill a hole through the floor board into the concrete and then hammer in the anchor bolts in. Then you tighten them down with a wrench.

I just re-build my old shed this way and it works great. Also, use treated lumber for your floor boards as they will last much longer than untreated lumber. you can also seal the gap between the board and concrete with a good caulking. that will keep water from blowing in under the boards.

I was going to go with vinyl siding for my end walls. But the house doesn't have vinyl so I'll use T-11 sheathing with trim boards and paint it to match the house. I also have a few old window shutters that I can paint to match the shutters on the house. It sould look nice when I am done....when it gets done...IF IT GETS DONE. (Please hurry up spring weather)

My problem is that i need to make sure the wall is strong enough to withstand high winds since i am in hurricane country. So I'll re-enforce the walls with 2/6s.

I got done with my Building like your putting up last July. (Just noticed the thread. I did the 30' x 60'. I had the concrete work done. I put the building up myself. Never again. The pole barn is a lot easier to work with but I do believe this building will outlast a pole barn. Never was so glad to get a project over. Wiring and everything was a snap though as I was able to attach the wiring conduit to the existing bolts. Only took about 3 half days of work to wire it. About 30 outlets. I am going to run air lines from the compressor so I won't be dragging an air hose all across the shop. Anyway good luck on your building
