Yesterday i'll put a new E4ME on my vette, but there is a problem! When i start the engine the idle is 500-550 rpm (cold engine) after 2-3 minutes it rise on 1000 rpm (warm engine), today i turned counter clockwise the fast idle screw and the idle falls to 800 rpm but what i have to do with the cold start? Thanks

Alex,

Check the choke cap (where the 12-volt source wire connects) with a cold engine. Is the cap being held by rivets or screws? Also, with the air cleaner removed, and while moving the accelerator lever a short distance, the choke flap should snap closed or almost closed. what kind of gap you see at the choke flap on the carburetor throat? There should be approximately 1/8 of an inch gap. That gap will get larger or narrower by rotating the choke cap slowly clockwise (widen) or counterclockwise (narrowing). That's why I asked. :eyerole

Also, the fast idle is adjusted on the second step of the choke lever, so you have to reach with your hand to make sure the adjusting screw sits on the second step of the lever. On the second step, the fast idle for an L81 should be 2000 - 2,200 RPM. I like mine at 1,800 RPM though.:ugh:ugh

Make sure you block the wheels when doing this, and secure the transmission lever on "park" or "neutral" (if manual). Safety first!:thumb

Thanks JerryLP, the problem is that i 'don't know the working of this beautyfull engine.Day by day i learn something more on V8 engine, so when i wrote the message i didn't know the electric choke working but now is simple.I set the fast idle screw about 1000 rpm, what you think? Is this your engine?Looks great, maybe one day mine will be like yours!I sent some pics of my carburetor and my exhaust system.

A 1,000 is a little low, I think. Your car will probably idle at around 750 in "park", so that would not be enough. The warm up is important for when the engine is cold, fuel will puddle in the intake. It needs the heat to reach optimum atomization. I would recommend at least 1,500 rpm. The specification rpm level is for getting you going in the time that it takes the choke coil to heat up, expand, and flip the flap open in the tower.

Lisle tools make a carb adjusting tool that has a flexible shank, and you will be able to connect it (it has a small socke at the end), and then start the car, and adjust the idle.

Here is another hint, if you connect a dwell meter to the green connector by the air pump, you'll be able to switch it to rpm mode, and monitor the rpm that way.

Good luck.:upthumbs

p.s. good looking carb. So that's the way they look when new..:thumb

FWIW the fast idle should be set when the engine is completely warmed up. The choke plate should be adjusted to be completely closed when engine is cold (overnite).
