New Guy Code Question

Hello All, I have been reading and enjoying this forum for the past few months. Very informative and a great group of people here. This is the place to be if you want to get any information or share any information regarding Corvette ownership. I purchased a Black 99 FRC in June and am really enjoying it. Unfortunately, been raining too much for my liking here in the Toledo, Ohio area. I relocated from the San Francisco Bay Area in California and it sure doesn't rain as much there during the summer as it does here! This is my second Corvette as I had a 1967 Coupe with a 427 4spd way back in 77. I sold it in 80. Anyway, my 99 is throwing me a code...P0410. I looked that up and it has something to do with the air system. I am not sure what that means and was wondering if it is still safe to drive. There has been no mods and been driving great. 18k miles on her. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have not started to get to know our C5 like I do the other Vettes around the house, but I do use the www.actron.com website for this sort of stuff.

You are correct about the code:

OBD II Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Definitions

You can now get the definitions of Global OBD II (P0) and Enhanced OBD II (P1) Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) online. Simply use the menus below to select your vehicle and request the definition of your OBD II DTC.
Here is the Definition of your Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)

Make Chevy
Year 1999

Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0410
DTC Definition: Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The car is plenty save to drive. This is part of the air emissions unit where the electric motor pumps air into the exhaust to reheat and burn the emissions clean. It is possible that it picked it up once, and if you were to clear the codes it would go away for good, or a long time.

You may have a sticky valve on the secondary portion of the air pump system. You might trace the lines, plug/unplug the sensor wires, tap on the valves.

You need to get somebody with a OBDII scanner to clear the code, or just keep on driving. After a certain number of starts without the malfunction being present, the light will go away.

C4C5 may jump in here and tell me I am off a bit. If so, please trust his opinion well above and beyond mine. He has forgotten more about the C4 and C5 Vette than I will ever know!

Hi there,
Actually, Chris is right on the money here.
There is a fuse in the passenger side fuse and relay center, next to the battery.
Have a look there first, to make sure the fuse isnt blown.
After that, as Chris said, the valves have been a sore spot with c5, as rust will accumulate and seal themselve shut. I would also check them as well.
A simple test, when you first start the car in the morning, is to listen to the left front of your car. The air injection pump is located under your left front headlamp assembly. If you hear a humming sound, chances of your check valves causing the problem are very good.
If you do NOT hear the humming noise, then you may have a bad pump.

welcome
I am about 50 miles west of you, but will be in Toledo for the ribfest at promende park this weekend piggin out. Probably be leaving the Vette home though since there is 4 of us going.

Thanks Chris and C4C5 for your quick response. Your help is greatly appreciated. Will check out fuse and pump in the morning. I have reset the DIC a couple of weeks back and the check engine light with the code came back after about an hour of driving. Hopefully I can fix the problem. Craig, I am going to check out the Cruise by the River get together Saturday 11 am to 4pm, i in downtown Perrysburg off of route 20. Wouldn't you know it....possible thunderstorms. Look for my black 99 FRC if you should be in the area.
