Hi, new to the board! Kind of looking for some help. I have a 74 that I'm going to put a GMPP 572/620 in. I'm wondering about problems with the fit of my Hooker side pipe headers. The 572 uses a tall 10.2" vs the stock 9.8" block and the exhaust ports are also raised a bit! Anyone have any experience with a tall deck block and sidepipe headers.

Whoa... :W

67Heaven maaaay be able to help you. I believe 67- late 70's used many of the same setup. He has the 502, which I believe is just the smaller version of your same block. Send him a PM ("private message") via the "User CP" link at the top-left corner of your CAC window.

Thanks EVO,

The ZZ-502 use a 9.8" block but the heads have raised exhaust ports. I will PM 67Heaven and ask if the raised ports caused any problems. If they did I may need a plan "B"! What mods have you done to your 700R-4 and how well does it handle the ZZ-4.

My ZZ4 is still more or less in it's stock form (rated: 355hp / 405tq). I bought my trans with room to grow. Here's what I have... http://www.700r4.com/trans/level3.shtml
To answer your question directly, my engine barely makes the trans work hard. Hell, it barely gets the fluid above 160 degrees...unless I'm intentionally holding shifts and whatnot...

welcome to CAC!!!good luck with the engine swap and enjoy ther forums!!!!!!!

Lightningrod,
Does your Vette currently have 2 four barrels side by side?? I've never seen that before, what set-up is it? I have 2 - 4's on my tractor but they are front and back, from a '58 Vette. I'm really curious as to how they are linked up, among other things!
Oh, and welcome to the CAC!

Craig

Hi Craig,

And thanks! Yes it's an old Edelbrock two 4 Cross Ram setup! It gives about the same effect as a Tunnel Ram without sticking out of your hood. The right carb feeds the left bank and the left carb the right bank! I think the rpm range is from like 3,500 -7,500 rpm. It had a pair of chrome 600's (only using the primaries) on it when I bought it at a drug auction. I put a set of 390's on it. It's an otherwise stock L-82!

lightingrod,

Welcome to the :CAC

Stepinwolf is dropping the same engine in a '63. He'll have info for you.

I had to order special "lower" head bolts and do a bit of grinding on the Hooker Header flange. Other than than, they fit okay.

I can dig up the info on the 4 lower head bolts for either side if you wish.

That would be great 67! I also dropped Stepinwolf a line!

Al,

For the lower row of head bolts on either side of the engine, I used ARP Head Bolts: Short Head bolt #5AP2.00-5L 7/16 12pt 2inch coarse thread.

Also, get the matching special washers which are just thin enough to help make a difference.

Try ARP direct...800-826-3045

I still had to do a minor amount of grinding on the header flanges to clear the bolts.

Good luck.

I guess the best way is to drop it in and see where we are at!

Thanks 67!

Al

Wow, what a project!
