OK, olde tyme hotrodder here,.....supposedly all the claims for syn oil are true, but under what circumstances???

way I understand it, the filters typically available today clog up and leave the engine in bypass mode after about 1500 miles of use, so what is the advantage of syn oil when the filter clog??? to me it means nothing is taken out and so it seems oil pressure drops, indicating I"m right as the by pass is activated...spring gives under pressures.....

ok, so just how long is syn oil supposed to last without a filter, and what are the consequences of leaving the accumulated contaminents in the oil after the filter is clogged???

never have understood any clear explanation of that/those facts....

I think that's hogwash (filters clogging at 1500 miles); I spent 37 years as an engineer and plant manager with GM and Chrysler and have built engines at home for at least that long, and I've NEVER seen a "clogged" oil filter on any engine that's had normal oil and filter change intervals. You can bet the OEM's wouldn't be specifying 7500-mile oil change intervals if there was any truth to that oil filter clogging myth, especially with 70,000-100,000 mile powertrain warranties they're liable for.

apparently you can change the filter and re-use the oil. there is supposedly enough good to cancel out the bad of the synthetic oil.

i have regular oil in mine , but am planning on using the synthetic oil when i finally put it on the road.mike

I'm glad you used the word 'supposedly' and are not one of the brain washed masses that believe all the marketing BS that floats around.

Try finding some hard documented PROOF that these oils are 'better'- you won't. :L:beer

Hi All, I remember when Mobil intro'ed Mobil 1, in the mid 70s. I seem to remember that it was a research project with the military to find a lubricant that worked well in extreem conditions of hear, cold, humidity, and time in use(change interval). I was restoring my 72 LT-1 mechanically at the time and made an inquiery with a friend that worked for Amarada-Hess Oil to see what the 'deal' was. I'm sure things have changed since then, product development & improvement & all that. The result of his conversation with me was(he was chem. eng.) that Mobil would not offer the typical warranty about if the oil causes the motor to fail they pay for the parts. I've been away from the car hobby since 84 so I don't know if this stuff still applies. The synthetic oil has the ability to have a uniform molecular structure (by design) and a specific molecular construction (by design) so you can chemically make it do specific things and have specific chemical abilities. It's like a designer molecule where as a natural oil is what nature & the additive package gives you; but the add. pkg. and the base oil are not very strongly attached and can break down & loose functionality. The synthetic can not because the additive pkg is part of the base molecule, unless the heat & shear limits are exceeded. The limits are typically 4x what natural base lube oil are. In a nut shell, the only thing it did not do well (back then) was stay on motor parts after shut down. It could bind water & organic acids, had higher B. P., lower pour point, higher shear point & all that good stuff. tt72
