99 Coupe-pewter
I've checked the archives and can't find what I'm looking for. I recently purchased a 99 coupe with 13,000 miles. I'm noticing a clunking sound as I come of the cluth shifting into 1st, 2nd, and reverse. Sound disappears as I run up the gears. Sounds like an external sound from the rearend although I don't think it's in the rearend. Possibly the swaybar?
Also, I have a whooshing sound as I come of the gas between gears. Mainly under moderate acceleration. And I don't notice it all the time. Hope this isn't the intake manifold... Any guidance or thoughts would be appreciated. I purchased a warranty for the vehichle so I should be covered for just about anything.
Thanks in advance,
Ronnie

Do you have an automatic or a 6 speed? I have a Z06 with a fair amount of drive train 'lash' (looseness), so I have a fair amount of noise involved with that. Also, the M6 transmission is noisy, especially in neutral with the clutch out. Does that fit with what you describe?

It is a 6 speed. The sound is more of a clunk or clank noise as I release the clutch and put pressure on the drivetrain. It is mainly in 1st gear and reverse but I have noticed it from 1st to 2nd. I also can reproduce the sound as I roll in 1st gear at idle and get on the gas a little. Almost seems like a u-joint but I don't think so. I noticed a bulletin about this type noise but was unable to view what the cause might be. Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I have that, too. It has always been present. It is a little worse now, but I do drag race the car. I do not know how much of that is "normal". The Corvette is built for performance, so there are times when smoothness is exchanged for strength and noise. I prefer that the car is strong and durable. A certain amount of play is present in drive lines; I used to be able to produce a similar noise in a truck that I owned. Normal? at least partly, but none of us can know about your car in particular.

Sounds like ordinary driveline lash to me. My truck is a 5-speed manual and has done the same thing since new 9 years ago. I can make the driveline make a loud clunk/clank sound if I let off of hard throttle very quickly or if I try quick shifting between gears and give it full throttle. I have not noticed it while letting the clutch out in reverse or when pressing the throttle, although that does not mean my truck does not do it then, too. I just have not noticed it then. The dealer checked it out for me when the truck was new and said it was perfectly normal. Well, nine years later, I have never had a problem. Unless the previous owner of your Vette seriously abused the transmission/driveline by constantly power shifting and flooring it, I doubt you have anything to worry about.
