2004 WHITE CONVERT
Hi folks, just bought my IST corvette, 2004 convert 6 speed. coming from a Z3 I love the car. Very informative forum as well. My question - on initial pulling away in 1st gear I can hear a distinct rattle sound for about 3 or 4 seconds. Is that transmission lash . Does it every time. Also I just picked the car up last week from the dealer, would this mean all recall items as the one just announced in August would have been done? Thanks in advance for any help. Way more fun then the BM

Welcome to the CAC and the Corvette community. I am sure you will enjoy both. The rattle you hear is normal and due to the length of the drive shaft back to the transaxle. It also rotates at the engine rpm due to the direct connection from engine to transaxle. I had the same sound in my 98 and in my 03. Do not assume that all recall notices have been taken care of just because you recently took delivery of the car. Have the service department at the dealer search the file on your car by VIN to see what service is required, if any.
Enjoy the ride,
Paul

marbles in a can or "gear rattle"

An explanation I got from a friend "in the know" a couple years ago.

The marbles in a can or "gear rattle" in neutral with the clutch released is caused by the mainshaft in the transmission rotating with no load upon it. Because the trans is rearward, when you release the clutch (even in neutral) the drive shaft and trans mainshaft are turning (free wheeling). When you press in the clutch, the drive shaft and trans mainshaft stop rotating, stopping the noise. The manual trans uses ATF that, when hot, is thinner than water and has poor noise dampening quality compared to gear oil.
You may also hear a "clank" noise when releasing the clutch rapidly in neutral. This is simply caused by the clutch engaging the stationary drive shaft.

Any reason that I wouldn't have this in my '97 M6? I let out the clutch in N and it's quiet as a mouse.
