Kumho's don't come in 315/35/17

Not entirely true. Kumho has autocross/track tires that do come in 315 size. Believe it or not, some people use those tires for street use. :)

I bought a wheel/tire package from AFS which comes with Dunlops. I will be a happy man when those tires are toast. They replaced the Firestones I had on the car and there is no comparison regarding traction.

Has anyone ever heard of there being any problems with Firestone's performance tires, a la tread separation? I never have.
Nope. ask an Explorer owner?

Tire Selection

I just had Nitto 555 Extremes mounted at 40,010 miles. At www.discounttiredirect.com my total for all 4 tires, delivery free, no sales tax [I am in Calif] was $658.00!! They were great to work with. Placed my order Wed 6 AM and they arrived UPS the next afternoon!!! I finally found a tire shop that was 'user friendly'. $255 to mount, high speed balance, and align [allign was $156 instead of $78 due to being way out]. I am taking measurements to see how tire wear goes. Thanks for all the input. I will try to pay back with some feed back. Denny:beer

4 years ago I paid about $500 for 4 Firestones for my 280ZX (and if I can find the receipt somewhere, I will tell you what type and size, too, but they were not stock rims). Two months after I got them, I sold the car to my brother when I moved back to New York from Virginia.

A week later the tread separated on him as he was taking an exit ramp - he wound up going over the high side of the ramp, but the car stayed upright. But since he was ok and not the original owner, Firestone would not pay for the repairs; the local dealer wound up paying, though, because we have a few lawyers in the family and we made it clear that it would cost them more to defend themselves than to just fix the car.

Also - those tires were not in the kind or size that were recalled, but neither were the ones that we use here at work on our Ford Trucks, and we had 3 tread separations in a 10 month period last year. I wound up pulling all the Firestones off our 4 Ford worktrucks.

Firestone said that their problems were only at that Youngstown plant - don't believe them! My local dealer told me that they are still having new tires come back with the separations, and they are supposed to have closed that factory.

One of my friends was nearly killed when his Firestone tires ripped apart on the drag strip in a manner that tires are not suppose to fail. Put him in the hospital.

The Firestones are reportedly good tires, performancewise. But their quality control is maybe not so good.
