Hi everyone!

Jeff here in Meridian, ID. I have an opportunity to acquire an 84 C4 with only 47K miles. Problem is I have heard many negative things about the Cross fire injection and four speed overdrive tranny. I've looked around the forum and was wondering if anyone has replaced the Xfire injection with an Edelbrock manifold and 4 barrel carb? I don't want to shuck out bucks for something that requires constant tinkering and copius amounts of money. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the CAC Jeff!
Good luck with the C4!

Welcome to CAC!!!
enjoy!!!

Whether you maintain the OE fuel injection or spend the money to remove the computer controls from the engine and convert to a four-barrel carburetor, you're going to tinker and spend a fair amount of money. Beyond the X-fire injection issue, a car what is 25 years old is probably going to require tinkering and money in some other areas besides the powertrain.

In what condition is this 84 with 47,000 miles and what's the asking price.

Jeff, welcome to the Corvette Action Center. You might find answers to some of your questions in the Crossfire Injection Mine Forum @ CrossFire Injection Mine - Corvette Action Center or go to the top of the page and put your cursor on forums, then on general forums, then click on Crossfire Injection Mine. No matter what year Vette you buy, you'll wind up spending LARGE amounts of money on it to get it, and keep it, just the way you want it. Have fun with it, and ENJOY it!

Not too familar with the cross fire injection or the 4 speed OD ;shrug which I think is called the Doug Nash 7 speed or something like that and it was developed for road racing as I remember. But I do have a friend that has this C-4 with both of these and to my knowledge has had no issues with either. For what it's worth!

Welcome to the site

Yikes!!!!!!

Please do yourself a favour and run away from this car as fast as you can. I owned one for 5 years and let me tell you you will have a crap load of problems. From my memory I will list a few items that I can remember.

Tranny - rebuilt was never correct again. Ok, until you brought her up to about 170 km/hr and it would slip out of 4th - sold it before it went again

Engine - head gasket

mufflers - rotted

shocks - rear shocks blew

dash - use to have to hit it if you wanted to see display

wipers - start whenever they wanted all by themselves

carpet - faded - like it had a bad stain

windows - plastic track snapped - had to replace with 1986 set up

throttle cable - where the plate was embedded into firewall - rotted

rattles - many

alternator - gone

paint - clearcoat peeled off

radio antenna - dead

raincoat - required when raining

Brakes - poor

Crossfire - never any fuel issues

May not experience all these issues but you never know. The only good thing I can remember about the car was that it was fun to drive and handled great.

Wish you luck with yours

Quite a rap sheet for sure; the guy I know that has one of these doesn't drive it all that much but he has had it on a few small trips with no problems, maybe you got a lemon!!!

That is most likely the difference - he never drove his that much. I drove the car daily and it got to the point where I would wonder what was going to break today when I start it up.

I use to tell my wife when I would be back and If I didn't make it she would have a pretty good idea that I was down again.

Made very good use of our auto club.

Oh ya, It was also hit lightly 2 times and side swiped once during my ownership, everytime with me in the car.

This car was unlucky for sure.

Welcome to the CAC!

I like my XFire, but thats just me. And like others have said, it's an old car and you WILL shell out money. If thats not what you want, you'd have to look more recent model.

Good luck wither way

I would not worry:ohnoes about the rap sheet that was posted. As my 88 gets older, it is experiencing sevral issues that I will gladly fix. I drive mine whenever I can-over 109k on the odometer now. I will be replacing the weatherstripping, top, y-pipe, shocks soon. I have already replaced the mufflers, master cylinder, power brake booster, and a few other items. Great fun to drive and less expensive on upkeep than my 02 Jeep or my wifes 97 Saturn. :)
