COCONUT GROVE, Fla. -- When a prize-winning, classic fire-red convertible was stolen from a Coconut Creek garage last month, the owner thought he'd never see it again.
But a Brevard County Sheriff's deputy found Lee Smith's 1960 Chevrolet Corvette on an abandoned stretch of road near Interstate 95.
Smith says he locked his home and garage Feb. 11 before leaving on a three-day trip. When he returned home, the garage was wide open and the car was missing. Police found no signs of forced entry.
Smith said he bought the car four years ago for about $32,500 through eBay, the online auction service. But that doesn't include what he paid to have pieces custom-made and installed on the car, which won first place three years in a row in its category at an annual Corvette show.
Smith isn't sure about the car's exact value, but said an Arizona auction company sold a similar one last year for $250,000.
The Brevard County Sheriff's Office still has the car and plans to return it to either the insurer or Smith. They have not specified what damage the car has.
