Vermont Composites to make parts for Corvette

BENNINGTON, Vt. -- A Bennington company is expecting to spend the next seven or eight years producing front fenders for the latest model of the Chevrolet Corvette.

Representatives of General Motors met yesterday with officials from Vermont Composites and state officials to announce the deal for 14-thousand fenders.

Composites General Manager Jim Sharkey says the deal with G-M will eventually represent about a quarter of the company's revenues.

The front quarter fenders to be made by Vermont Composites weigh three and a half pounds.

Vermont Composites is the biggest supplier of carbon fiber products in the United States. Its Bennington plant employs about 175 people.

Vt. Composites has Corvette deal

BENNINGTON — Vermont Composites Inc. will produce about 14,000 front-side fenders for the Z06 Corvette that General Motors is launching this fall.

Officials wouldn't disclose the value of the contract but Vermont Composites General Manager Jim Sharkey said the company expected to produce 60 carbon fiber fenders a day for the next seven to eight years.

When production gets into full swing, the deal would add diversity to the company's medical and aerospace product lines and would eventually represent a quarter of all revenues, he said.

Race car technology was used to design the parts for an "exotic" car that would be sold in the commercial market, said Hill. The front quarter fenders to be made by Vermont Composites weighs just 3.5 pounds.

Vermont Composites, which recently opened a second plant in Bennington and an office in Switzerland, is the biggest supplier of carbon fiber products in the United States.
