GM Powertrain is using SEMA to show off new engines and variants, including two engines with Displacement on Demand (DOD) cylinder-deactivation technology for improved fuel economy. By 2008, GM will have two million vehicles with V-8 and V-6 engines with DOD. The new engines with this technology are:


The Gen IV small-block V-8, with higher performance and an array of technical advancements. The Vortec 5300 small-block with DOD debuts on V-8-equipped versions of the 2005 Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT, GMC Envoy XUV and Buick Rainier. An automotive application of the Gen IV small-block without DOD debuts later in the 2005 Corvette. "

The concept of the fastest American car built coupled with the fuel economy that DoD promises is amazing.

I'm trying not to sound fickle, but I think it's also the principle of the thing. A Corvette, at least to me, should always, ALWAYS be running on all 8 cylinders (or all 10 or all 12 ). I recognize that gas mileage is important to some folks, but to me the Corvette, especially the Z06, is not about fuel economy.

I think that fuel economy is important to even the most avid performance adicts among us because GM has a NO GAS GUZZLER POLICY. If incorporating DOD into the Vette enables the engineers to increase HP / Tq by 8% - or some other significant factor - while staying just abovethe guzzler class, I'm all for it. Although I do not look forward to loosing a throaty V8 idle.

I'd rather not have the DOD system, I can't imagine be so quite at a stop light. Plus I'm sure it's gotta cost us a few tenths of a second off the line.

If they are able to increase performance because of it, then I would entertain the idea. However, that is the ONLY condition.

Otherwise, if it is simply a fuel saving mechanism, then to hell with it. The point of a Corvette is not to save fuel and keep money in your pocket at the pump. It's not a car for practical functionality. Corvette's get great gas mileage anyway, and I would miss the sound of the V8. Plus it's one more thing to break down.

DoD on a corvette?I hope not.I think the corvette should not be put in any sort of class besides sports car,and,in my opinion shutting down cylinders to save fuel will compromise performance.I personally have other vehicles to use for different purposes,as do most people I know who own corvettes.Any employee at GM who is pushing for DoD in a corvette should be fired.Fuel consumption is important but not a major reason for buying a corvette over it's competition.I think it would be a step backwards with regards to corvette being a world-class sports car.I believe DoD is a great addition to any other vehicle besides a sports car.Could you possibly dream of the idea of seeing DoD in a Ferrari?That thought gives me the chills.Just my 2cents(Canadian cents) that is.

Question from a newbie:
Is it a possibility that the DoD could be turned off via a dash mounted toggle or some other device?
I understand the trepidation in the new technology because of a possible loss of performance/growl/etc, but if we could selectively deactivate the DoD then I'd be all for it. That way, when we're not going light to light against another, or cruising around town listening to the pipes, we can save money/gas/environment/etc.
I would welcome it if there was a performance increase as described by LongTimer, and an on/off switch was available.

I can't think of a single moment that I didn't want to hear the exhaust sound and feel the V8 power in a Corvette. It doesn't matter whether I'm agressive or just going to get the Sunday paper.

If the DoD happens, I'm sure (hope) there will be a way to deactivate it like 1st to 4th shifting.

I really can't say fuel economy doesn't make ANY difference. People can't believe it when I tell them I get almost 30 MPG on the highway! BUT when I want power, it's always there!!

CFour: What a horror the 8-6-4 was for Cadillac!!! I was working at a Cadillac Dealership parts department when that was going on. What a mess!!!

Would not want DoD in the new Vette. I'm sure it will happen though as they get the bugs worked out. I would rather have all engine choices available in any body style the way it used to be which would make the cars more personalized. I personally could care less about the mileage in the Corvette when the typical SUV or van-pickup has done little to nothing about mileage up to this point. Let them invest the research there. For the limited number of these cars sold, lets hope they don't mess it up with some ridiculous system to make a Corvette get 40 miles to the gallon. As for Gas guzzler tax, if that is a problem, tack it on to the price. I'll pay for the performance.

I could possibly stomach DOD as an "option" to be available. Then it would have to be strictly "manual". Toggle on/off.....
Otherwise, in the sportscar world, corvette gets that "watered down" image and sales will decline.
I didn't buy a vette to have "less" car!

Ya, it's funny how I had so much time to F*rt around with solid lifters back then. I swear the days and weeks get shorter as I get older.

Every Saturday morning was reserved for adjusting the lifters and just general repairs and upgrades. Sometimes my wife new about the upgrades....and sometimes not!

Possibilities:
1. These 2005 trucks will have an early release date for some reason.
2. The C6 release has been delayed long enough for GM to say, "later in the 2005 Corvette."
3. a. The C6 base engine may be the Gen III LS6. Only additional emmissions testing would be for an automatic version.
b. "Later" the Targa & Vert would offer the Gen IV LS2 - maybe 450HP - as an optional higher performance engine.
c. The Gen IV LS7, of course, remains scheduled for the C6 Z06.
4. "Later" means a week.

I disagree, GMPT showing these engines to the public at SEMA doesn't imply C6 will be late.

1. Possible but unlikely.
2 The 2005 Corvette will go on sale about the same time as most other 05s. This has been covered in other threads. Why the late introduction rumor again?
3a-b The base engine for the 05 Targa is a six-liter of about 400 hp. The convertible will come later with the same engine.
3c. You've got that right.

I know just two kind of vette owners:

1.-The ones that love to keep their vettes stock-original the best they can.

2.-The ones that love to do everything they can to go faster in their vettes! (I belong here, but I like the number "1" too)

But I don't know anybody who makes mods to their vettes to cut gas expenses and performance! (I know there must be someone out there).

This whole "DOD" idea in a vette makes me SICK!

It's just my humble opinion!
