1993 Torch Red Coupe
Have a 93 LT-1 coupe which I just bought last week. I am new to vettes. Today I moved the car about 200 feet to a spot in front of my office. Came back out 5 minutes later to show it to a friend and it wouldn't start. No crank no click nothing. Lights and radio worked and charge was normal. I went inside took care of a client came out to try again before calling the auto club and it started right up. I sthere a security feature I tripped that I am unaware of?

I am not familiar with the secruity system on the later C4's but this is a possibility. I thought though that they cut fuel supply, allowing the cars to crank, I could be wrong though.

You probably have a loose ground, or bad connection somewhere, probably on the starter Solenoid. That is what I would bet. Or perhaps the solenoid is on it's way out. My Trans am would start cold, then after it was warm it wouldn't start. Had to cool off a bit.

If the VATS is the same as in the earlier models (and I can't say for sure), you are most likely correct. You did something that activated the security system and it takes 5 minutes to reset. Welcome to the :CAC

One thing to check is the positive terminal post behind the battery. Between the firewall and the battery where all the fusible links connect to. Corrosion will sometimes cause this. If you get a no start feel the wires coming off that post, if they are hot to the touch, you probabally need to clean each of the ring terminals and resecure.

It sounds like your VATS, do you have another key? You can try cleaning the contacts on the key! This seems to be a common problem, as these cars age.

I had the exact same problem, seems my ignition key was worn to the point that the resistor wasn't reading right all the time. Get a new key made.:beer

Same problem with my 88. First car show and it does the same thing. Cleaned up the key and it's been working perfectly for almost 4 years.

No start

My ignition switch got 'dirty' and gave the same symptoms.
I used an ear plug (those foamy things that one compresses then inserts into the ear for noise reduction) to 'swab' out the key slot. Take care to not cram too much in and break it off. It worked and the car started after the 5+ minute reset time. Then it was ok for several weeks. A second cleaning and it has started well for several months now.
Hope this works for you too.

I am having a very similar problem with my 94 LT1. Have you fixed this problem ? If so what was the cause ? Right now I have it norrowed down to the distributor, injectors, 02 sensors, ECM, or Temperature Switch. Not sure where to start. Need to take my best guess on which one it might be, as I do not have thousands of dollars sitting around to throw at getting this fixed. Any comments ? Thanks.

In my case it was related to the built in security system which shuts off the fuel and electronic starting system if you use anything other than the ignition key to start the car. The black "chip" on the ignition key needs to be properly seated to start the car. Make sure you have a good quality ignition key if the symptoms are exactly the same as mine before you go spending thousands. also make sure the key goes in straight and is in fully before you crank the engine. Good luck

Vats

Before spending any $$$, do a search regarding VATS bypass using the search tab above. Even if you only bypass it temporarily, it's an excellent, easy diagnostic tool.
If you can't find it, come back here and let us help.

If the car has lived on the Jersey Shore most of its life, you will most likely have some corrosion issues, especially with electrical connections. If you're handy, try cleaning the battery terminals & cables, then any other electrical connection you can get to.

Also try pulling each fuse, one at a time, then re-seating them. Take your keys to the dealer parts counter and ask them to check the resistor. You will have 1 of 15 different combinations. Hopefully, both your keys will register the same value.

The security systems on these cars are pretty involved, at least what I was used to. Read up on these issues in your owners manual. If you don't have one, contact the The National Corvette Museum in KY. I bought the manual, the original build sheet-dealer window sticker, and dealer brochure for my model year...maybe $20-30.
