No Start

Ok guys, now the problem of no start has occured again right in my own driveway. I have an '87, Auto trans. Voltage appears ok (12.0v), all electrical, lights, radio etc ok. I think this has to do with the problem, occurs when in Park on an uphill incline (like my driveway). I checked the VATS with the spare key, it too didn't turn over. The car started fine when it was on level ground but when I backed out of the garage onto the incline driveway it wouldn't start after that. I have tried running it through all the gears while trying to start it---nothing! Where do I go from here????

There is a wire connected to the distributor on the 84 that gave me problems. Its One of the GM test wire taps located right near the tach wire. Mine kept grounding out and stalling the car. I snipped it off...problem solved and I never looked back

If the voltage is only 12.0V, it's might not be ok. Battery voltage, if the unit is fully charged, will be 12.6V. Sometimes 12V from a charged battery, means the battery is failing.

If the car starts on level ground but won't start on an incline, I'd be looking for a problem somewhere with wires and connections.

You could be right, it could be the battery. I have no idea how old the batt is. I've had the car 3 years and its never been changed. I trickle charge it in the winter when not driving it. Normally voltage is around 13v when in drive mode. Sitting in the driveway it was 11.7v. Moot point now, I've had it towed to my repair shop. Since all the answers I got led me to at least 6 potential problems, further diagnosis would have led me to change things that may not need changing. When I find what the culprit was I will put it on this forum. Thanks, Chuck

Well folks, it cost me a bundle but the problem ended up being the starter. An old mechanic trick was to bang on the starter (what you can see of it on an '87 is practically nothing) and it started right up. I know I didn't have the tools or wherewithall to do the job of changing it out. Thanks one and all for all the ideas of what it could be----starter was one of the many ideas. Others fyi were battery, neutral safety switch, vats, wiring, starter relay, ignition. Obviously the most expensive I happened to get.
