i put mine in with out resetting the computer and instantly i noticed a big difference! no more hard starting, easier idle, fuel economy went back up, and more HP detailed by the butt dyno :D

Yeah maybe my car wont stall now three times before it actually goes into fast idle and stays running... I have yet to start it up today. It is so damn hot.

OH MAN... your A/C is out??? I guess you know how 67heaven felt on the way down to BG. ;LOL

Get that fixed soon, doesn't look like we are getting relief any time soon.

Yea, I guess the ECM is just looking for a number on that address line. Get a reading out its comfort zone and it causes trouble. If it's been failing for a while you wouldn't notice the drop in performance so much. Then getting it back in spec, you really notice an improvement. ;)

Yeah I want to, but I have just heard so many different ways of getting it done. All my friends tell me just get the big can of oil at AutoZone, and put three cans of 134 in. I highly doubt that is the correct way of doing it.
 
I charged a system years ago, but don't remember how I did it. As you probably know... there's a high side and a low side, you have to fill on the low/vacuum side. Instructions on the kit??? Did you disconnect something to make it discharge or did it slow leak on you? You should find the leak if possible before you fill it to avoid damaging the compressor.

My home A/C went out this morning! :mad It's only 83 in my house right now. ACK! I should take a drive in the Vette with the A/C on. Repairman will be here in the morning. :D

Yeah when I first got it it blew cool. And last summer it blew cool as well. And now when I turned it on a few days it blew hot. Can you just get like the kit at Autozone with the oil and fill it? ;shrug
 
If it has already been converted to R134a ('94 and older) then yes, you can go get a "low side recharge kit"...you should be able to buy a can that already has oil in it.

If it has not been converted to R134a already...then you either have to go to someone licensed for R12 to recharge it, or have it converted to R134a.

Whats involved with converting it? It is an 87 so it has R12 in it. I doubt it has been converted.
 
Or buy a kit with an R-12 replacement. We keep having these discussions, but no hard data... so I bought (off eBay) a recharge kit of Freeze-12. Seems to be the best of the blended replacements - non-flammable, R-12 oil compatible, cheap price. I paid $40 plus shipping for 3 (4?) cans of Freeze-12, a can of leak-test, the hose/gauge set, and a warning sticker for service places. My vette's needed a recharge since I started the rebuild, and it's almost as hot here as in Indiana so I've not been driving it lately.

Will report after I do the work.

Yeah, I hate to keep bringing this old topic back up. But it seems like a lot of people do many different things, and I just don't know what will work. Obviously I want to go the cheapest way I can, but also not do it half azzed.
 
I had the same problem with my '87. I found a mechanic licensed for R-12 and bit the bullet and had him recharge it with R-12. He checked the system and said it was tight but that after 18 years, you're bound to lose some of the coolant and it just got to the point where the system didn't want to cool very well.

Cost me under $80 and it's spitting ice cubes now.

If it doesn't hold, I will have invested (read "pee'd away") $80 in the car and still have to go to the R-134 (or whatever they have coming out soon since that's what I've heard they're about to do).

I figured it was worth a shot.
