I've had my 96 for 3 weeks now. I decided to take it in and get a full service done since I did not know when the last time it had had one. The mechanic there is a good wrench and I trust his work. Besides I get to pick up the stuff I want and he will use it and I'm only out labor plus what ever I decided to buy for him to use. In this case about $500 in plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, filters, and oil.

We drove there yesterday morning about 50 miles from our place and were about an hour early. So we went inside to wait while he finished up on the car he was working on. He came in about a half hour later I handed him the keys and he went out to get started. About 10 minutes after that my wife went out side to have a smoke and he had her come and get me.

He asked me what I new about the car. I told him according to the carfax the dealer had it had had 4 owners and hadn't been wrecked. Then he started pointing out some things on it. The engine, radiator, water pump, ac, all hoses, tie rods and ends, shocks, pretty much everything under the hood was new. You could tell by the putting a little oil off the dip stick on your finger it was no where near needing to be changed. He said it looked like Mobile 1 to him. Everything was new enough it wasn't close to needing to be serviced. He said the only time you see this much new on a front end is when the vehicle has been wrecked and it was all replaced. He said the engine was LT4 probably a rebuild because of the how good a condition it was in. He showed me the signs that the engine was pulled and replaced along with about everything else including the motor mounts.

The rear tires were replaced by the dealer. He was showing me the fronts which are new except for the fact that inside the tread there is dry rot cracks which means the car sat for a long time. So they will need to be replaced. I guess at the end of the day I can say I have a 96 LT4 that has a lot of new stuff on it. Now I would like to know more of the history on what happened that so much of the front end was replaced.

Good looking car there. It's possible that it was damaged in the past. If that's true, start looking at things like the frame and see if you can find evidence of repairs, paint mismatch, wiring repairs etc. It's just as possible someone had the engine rebuilt due to wear or damage (you didn't mention mileage). If I had an engine out for a rebuild, I'd do everything at the same time while it's accessible. It's also just as possible your car was owned by someone very devoted to it and kept It squeaky clean.

Can't say either way without giving it a good once-over but it could be either.

Sounds like it's in great shape. Guessing about the history of the car aside, I'd drive and it and enjoy the hell out of it. New parts are a good thing, and new or rebuilt LT4 is not a bad thing. Glass half full situation.

If it were mine after finding those situations I would find a frame and alignment specialist shop (not a Goodyear, Schwaab, etc, but a shop that specializes in frame and alignment work) and have the alignment checked. Enjoy the ride. :)

The odometer read 80500 when I bought it. 7/7/98 it was at 29668. 7/5/07 it was 49652. The car as a whole is in great shape even for a lot newer vehicle. I picked up the autocheck from dealer awhile ago. Hard to say what it's story is. It looks great and drives great. So this fat guy in Arkansas is happy. It will get it's share of driving now.

We don't have Schwaab down here, but at some point this year I will get that done. I will enjoy it.

I'm beginning to wonder since it's early life seemed to be moving from one garage to another and getting very little road time if the seals dried out like they do on bikes that aren't ridden and the engine was pulled to reinstall the gaskets.

It's a nice ride in good enough shape the neighbors thought it was new. I will work through the things that need to be fixed and enjoy the fact I have a vette.

Today is relaxation day #2. First days I've had off since January. So I'm going to sit in the new recliner I brought home with the other furniture last night and enjoy some cold libations and relax. The Banana on Oreos that my wife calls my new toy will have to wait a few days for some more attention. I need to move my tools to their new home and get the new parts on my RoadKing so I can enjoy my first love next weekend and get some wind therapy.
