Now that AC PF-25 Oil filters are no longer avail. what do you use w/ your L98 & why?

I bought some of the last of the AC PF25 oil filters and got to thinking about it - what is the acceptable alternative for a sufficient filter??

The "catalog replacement" is physically smaller - although I was advised the filter surface area is actually greater in the replacements design :confused

With three cars taking the same filter, it won't be long until my "supply" is gone :ugh - then what??


What do you use - and why did you choose that brand??

Get the AC Delco PF1218. It holds about 3/4 of a quart and it still fits easily in the space and does not stick down below the oil pan.

The PF1218 has an anti-drainback valve but because the filte is mounted upright, it's not a problem.

The 1" hex nut sure makes things easy!:L

That and the studies I've read about the filtering of the Mobil 1 filter are quite exceptional.

I am using the Ac/Delco 454 replacement. I used to use the Mobil 1 filter, but it was too expensive on top of the expensive RedLine synthetic oil I currently use, and I change the oil often anyway AND the AC/Delco fiters are fine. At some point you have to reign some of this expensive stuff in and not worry. I thought about the AC/Delco 1218, but I am concerned a bit about ground clearance. Remember, our L98 cars have the oil cooler attachment to take into account as it effectively causes a filter to be lower to the ground. Clearance is a big concern as I live in Houston, which has got terrible roads and a lot of cars/pickups in unbelievably bad shape that deposit wreckage on the freeways. It's a bad scene.

I have enough PF25's to last me 30 years of oil changes on the B2K if I use a Fram, or other filter on my regular 89 L98...

I use a K&N. It is the same size as the PF-25. I know size doesn't mean better filtration, but the new one is just to small... Oh the 1" hes on the bottom of the filter is nice as well.

Why is the PF-454 too small?

Fine, but why is that a problem? Lots of components on cars have gotten smaller over the years yet are better. Consider electronics (the development of microprossessors and the functions they control is an example). Perhaps someone knows the reason why the 454 replaced the 25. Maybe it was cheaper to produce? Maybe they were able to improve the filtering medium? Maybe they were able to improve the filtering medium so that they did not have to use as much, which meant they could get the same or better results by making the filter smaller and save production costs as well? Anyone know, or are we all assuming that a physically larger filter is a better filter?

Yes, the 454 does have better filtration, as what I am told by c4c5specialist, and as I said

I know size doesn't mean better filtration

I just like the 1" hex on the bottom and it holds more oil.
